hey all!!!

ok another question for the experts

after much thought and planning i have come to a crossroads for video cards for my budget..

hence i need some opinions..

1)6800gs 256mb ram

2)7600gs 256mb ram

option 2 is a bit more expensive but am willing to pay.

will it be worth paying for option2?strictly for gaming btw,i just want to run some FPS games,f.e.a.r,farcry,etc...will they fly?

thanks in advance..=^/

Does your Dell have a PCI-Express slot?

If you do in fact have a 7600 GS I would suggest that over the 6800 GS. The 7600 has features that the 6800 does not have, though both are relatively equal in number-crunching performance.

Think about waiting until nvidia's 8-series is released, though. They claim that the next series will fix the HDR-FSAA problem that plagues current graphics cards (but not ATI!)

Ok, wasn't thinking when I posted that... LOL

I meant to say that if you have a PCIe slot, you should go for the 7600 GS over the 6800 GS if they're relatively equal in price.

Anything less that a 3.2GHz P4 will bottleneck even the slowest of those two cards.

What video card do you have in it at the moment?

"....building up a system from scratch...."

It's always nice if you supply ALL the info, that way we don't have to guess. I think most of us assumed you're asking about a Dell machine since that's what you have listed.

Hopefully you have not ordered any component yet?

If you are hoping to build the system from scratch, we need to know what your budget parameters are, your CPU preference (AMD has corresponding gaming edge), what components you'll be buying and the ones you already have.

Sometimes knowing your location is valuable and other times, it isn't a considerable factor in the decision making process.

I have no experience with either card, but looking at the specs, the 6800GS looks to be MUCH better. And I don't know where you're shopping, but the 6800GS should be at least $50-75 more than the 7600GS

6800GS
core = 425MHz
memory = 1000MHz (GDDR3)
interface = 256-bit
pixel per clock = 12

7600GS
core = 400MHz
memory = 800MHz (GDDR2)
interface = 128-bit
pixel per clock = 12

You need to consider the entire configuration, not just the video card. If your CPU is too weak, it will hold the card back...plus you need plenty of RAM for gaming (1GB minimum). The chipset that your motherboard is based on can have a significant impact on overall performance, plus your power supply has be able to handle the load of all the components. When it comes to gaming, AMD has the edge over Intel..at least for now.

well my cpu will be an p4/2.8ghz/1gb ram,i know ppl agree AMD has the edge but my cirmustance dosent allow for that as im getting the pc as a hand me down so cant be too fussy...who would that sit with the 6800gs card??
