I will be placing an order tomorrow but before it's 100% set, I would like to know people's opinions on these specs:

Mobo - Abit Fatal1ty AN8 (no SLI) - $375 Can

Processor - AMD Athlon64 3000+ Socket 939 - $190 Can

VideoCard - MSI Radeon X800XL 256MB PCI-E - $390 Can

RAM - 512 DDR 3200 (not sure of the company) $70 Can (I know this isn’t good)

Antec TrueControle 2.0 550Watts - $150 Can

Hard Drive - Western Digital - 160Gig - 7200 - IDE - $119 Can

I plan to play HL2, COD, Postal, Swat4 for games
and use Adobe Premiere, Vegas 5 and Pinnacle for video editing.

This rig isn't only going to be for gaming, I plan to do video editing as well (as you can plainly see). I probably "overkilled" a few items purposely so it can last me for a long time. And yes I know I'm paying a lot now but that honestly doesn't bother me. How does this look so far?

Thanks.

Except for the software, I don't see that at all! You need a LOT more RAM that 512MB for video editing & you should have 1GB (2 x 512MB) for gaming.

I know these prices are Canadian, but $375 for a board? Where are you buying from? I suggest you look for the DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D or the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum. And get an SATA HDD, not IDE.

I'd also go with a 3200+ CPU (Venice core) over the 3000+, the price difference should be minimal.

I'm sorry, I wrote the price wrong for the mobo. It's 275$. For video editing, how much RAM is sufficient? The RAM for gaming will be strongly considered. As for the SATA, there isn't much of a price difference and I believe a little faster? How could I partition a SATA HD?

Almost forgot:
"I'd also go with a 3200+ CPU (Venice core) over the 3000+, the price difference should be minimal."
The price difference is 100$ which IS a big thing for me also the reason why I chose the 512RAM. I've passed my spending limit by 400$ and I have to stop there. Can't I just overclock the 3000+ to make it equivalent to a 3200+?

you could probably o/c the CPU, but RAM is essential. 512mb RAM willl NOT be sufficient. the 'killer' gaming system i am biulding will have 2gb RAM, but 1gb is okay if you are on a seriuos budget.

Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours.

Is the 550Watt PSU too much? I'm thinking I could save a little money and get a 380Watt and get Corsair TwinX1024-3200C2 - $193 Can.

550W "may" be too much...the important thing is that you get one that supports the new ATX12V 2.0 standard. It should have a 24-pin main ATX power plug, twin +12v rails, & power plugs for SATA HDDs. You partition your SATA HDD just like you would any other...either use the software CD that comes with the drive, or do it when you go to install WinXP

1GB (2 x 512MB) PC3200 CL 2.5 running in dual channel mode is what's recommended for gaming...anything beyond that is just a waste of money. Video editting is a whole other ballgame though...the more RAM you get, the better, so if you can afford 2GB, go for it.

I suggest you look into the other 2 boards I suggested...especially the DFI. It should be cheaper, so the money saved can be spent elsewhere.

I don't know where you're buying from, but I suggest you shop around. I realize US prices are different, but the 3200+ is only about $40 more than the 3000+
