hello all,
my friends computer freezes when he plays neverwinter nights and we don't know why. it freezes at different times but will freeze everytime. he has an amd 2600+ and one gig of ddr 400 ram, he had a 350w ps w/ 3 cd drives. one is a regular cd rom drive, the second is a burner, and the third is a dvd drive. i think this may have something to do with it seeing how that 350w ps is running 3 drives. he has win xp pro also.thanx in advance,
<shad>

what video card? if it's even remotely high-end, i'd guess it's the power supply.
how does he connect to the internet? Could it just be a connection speed problem?

Hiyas. First off, you might have been better off posting this under CPUs/Overclocking if you thought it was a hardware problem.
Does it only freeze in NWN? If so, it could have to do with the program itself. Or if that's the only game that you play online, it could have something to do with your network card or modem.
I highly doubt that it's the 3 CD/DVD drives as they don't take that much power to operate and you probably are not using all 3 at the same time. But if all your other components are already taxing the power supply to it's limit, then yes the third one could push it into overload.
You never mentioned what power supply you are using nor any of your other components. Besides the CPU, I believe that it's the video card now-a-days that uses the most power. And if it's a higher end card, then it's probably like UpAndComing said. And a 350W power supply may or may not be a true 350W power supply, especially after it gets to it's operating temperature.
Take care and always try to have fun,
Because life is too short not to.
And you never know when any day could be your last,
So never take anything, and especially anyone for granted!

well, i guess i should have posted this in hardware. the computer freezes in command and conquer generals and nwn, but he plays rome total war and it doesn't freeze. he has a radeon 9600 pro and an antec p.s. it even freezes when not playing online. also, when it freezes, it's not like you can hit cntrl/alt/delete, it completely freezes, you have to shut the computer off. if there is more info you need i will provide it.
thanx again,

I have the same problem, NWN locks up and freezes my system. No other on-line game does this, only NWN. Sometimes i am able to play for a couple hours, other times its only a couple of minutes. Video and sound drivers are all up to-date (biowares default answer when asked about this problem is "make sure you have the latest drivers")
I ran DXDIAG on my system, and did notice one thing which has me wondering:
------------
DxDiag Notes
------------
DirectX Files Tab: The file directx.cpl is an old version, which could cause problems.
Display Tab 1: No problems found.
Sound Tab 1: No problems found.
Music Tab: No problems found.
Input Tab: No problems found.Anybody have any idea's?
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
1024MB RAM
RADEON 9600 XT AGP
SoundMAX Digital Audio

I've also had this exact same problem, and I'd guess the one thing we have in common is a RADEON 9600. My guess is that Bioware did something funny with their latest patch that the 9600 doesn't agree with. I have idea why it happens or what causes it, but I was able to play for hours on end with my 9600 before the 1.65 patch was released...
Bioware is all too helpful. (replace 'all too' with 'not') I haven't found any answers to this inquiry; only more questions.

as well as uninstalling my sound drivers and using no sound. same as above i can get a few hours out of it.
u can try following this by support of steam
