Probably the most conclusive way would be to look at your mothererboard in detail. If you can find the model number (usually the largest number somewhere in the middle) you can type that into google and you will be able to find websites with detailed specifications of your motherboard to find out if it has AGPx4 or AGPx8.

Physically, in a tower case, the AGP slot is located above the PCI slots (which are usually white, used for soundcards etc, you'll probably have between 2 to 5 pci slots which all look the same as each other) The AGP slot should be paralell with the PCI slots (So it is in allignment with the blanking plates on the back) It's also positioned a little bit further back away from the rear of the case and is almost always in a different colour from the PCI slots, they're usually brown but I'm not sure whether brown is the only colour used.

AGPx4 Graphics cards will work in AGPx2, AGPx4 and AGPx8 slots, but only at AGPx2 speeds for AGPx2 slots and AGPx4 speed in AGPx4 slots and only at AGPx4 speed for AGPx8 slots.

AGPx8 Graphics cards will work in AGPx2, AGPx4 and AGPx8 slots, but only at AGPx2 speed for AGPx2 slots, AGPx4 speed in AGPx4 slots and AGPx8 speeds in an AGPx8 slot.

So it's all cross-compatible with each other.

The speed difference between AGPx4 and AGPx8 during games is still fairly negligable in all but the most recent games.

AGPx8 will be phased out in the next year or two in favour of PCI-Express (x16 speed) which is not cross-compatible with any form of AGP.

I sincerely hope not. I think the new PCI port will just be an option for a long time time to come. There is still no certain evedence to sugest that it will superseed AGP. Just look at the old faithfull <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=22&k=floppy%20drive" onmouseover="window.status='floppy drive'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">floppy drive. When CD ROM first came out people said the same about that.

Phew... that feels better. I've just spen £321 on my new GT6800 256 (AGP CARD) I want this one to last at least three years.

So will PCI-express enabled motherboards have an AGP port on-board too?
I was thinking of upgrading my graphics card but i'm holding out until I really need a new card, hopefully about when my current processor/motherboard and RAM is really out of date too.
