CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron 2.4 Ghz
Comment:
I was thinking of perchasing either a intel celeron D 2.8 ghz 256 L2 or a intel pentium 2.8 ghz 1mb L2 and the the price of a intel pentium is about twice of the Intel celeron . therefore i was thinking wat the used of the L2 memory.

Go for the P4, it'll handle way better for gaming than the Celeron comparison.

If your on a budget and want to go with a celeron.. go AMD and go with the sempron. Just as cheap and a far better performer.

Processor P4@ 2.6 Ghz, FSB@535Mhz
RAM 512MB's PC2700/32001 256 stick of each. Hard Disk Drives 1 40 GB HD 1 10 GB HD CD/DVD Drives CDRW52X

Might as well go Athlon XP. It's not much more money than a Sempron.

I think he's trying to upgrade his CPU with the same motherboard though.

Unfortunately, the Pentium 4 2.8GHz CPU's go for about $160, and offers little over the Celeron D 2.8GHz since you're getting the same CPU with less cache in the celeron d, unless you can use one of the P4's with the higher "800MHz" front side bus.

My honest advice would be upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and Fan. Why spend $160 on a P4 when you can get an Athlon 64 Venice 3000 for $125, and an NForce3 Ultra mobo for $90? You'd have a lot faster of a CPU, an actual upgrade path, not to mention other upgraded components from onboard devices such as a gigabit NIC and sound. Only question is if you have PC3200 memory.

But if the question is between the p4 and the celeron d provided the only p4 you can put on your motherboard is the Prescott "533MHz" fsb one, go with the celeron d.

As long as your RAM is PC2700 or better, you're fine. If you have PC3200, and your motherboard supports it, get an "800MHz" bus P4 2.8GHz at the same price as the other P4 if you're going P4.

Dont you need to know what type of motherboard he has, because some on motherboards you can't just make the jump to p4's. On that note i want to know if my pc is compatible with p4's, because i've been under the impression that i would have to change my motherboard in order to upgrade my cpu.

Yes, mobo documentation should ALWAYS be checked before installing any new CPU. That's a given.

if you have more option, i would go for AMD athlon 64, its the fastest for gaming so far. aveage amd athlon fx 64, 2.4GHZ has 104 score, then newest P4 3.75GHZ only get 102 score.

P4 3.2GHZ
kingstone 1GB DDR 3200
ABIT AS8 mobo
Nvidia geforce 6800
Soundblaster 24-bit audigy 2
