My friend has a problem with his computer when playing games.

When loading games it would start up and just before the start screen it would go straight back to desktop with no sign of the game. Some games he can load up but they have no sound (works normal apart from games)

I have looked at the graphic card settings and they seem ok. I am not really an expert though but the games have worked in the past and his computer is new.

His using:
Pentium 4
Windows XP
Nivida GeForce FX5200
About 150GB RAM
3.2 Mhz
DirectX 9

Can anyone help?

I will just jump in and ask you the first thing that 99% of people here will ask you.... have you updated ALL your drivers?

Sounds like a sound card error by your post, if it's on board sound then go to your motherboard manufacturers website a get the latest drivers for everything related.

Yes he updated the graphic drivers. Would the sound card effect a game coming on and if it is the sound card why does the rest of the pc applications work with sound?

You say he updated the graphics drivers, what about chipset, soundcard, ide and any ohter drivers that can be updated, any one of these could cause a fatal conflict and cause games to fail.

150GB of RAM? Is that possible? Your friend must have a supercomputer or something. Sure that's not the hard drive size?

Whoa, that sounds bad, not to mention annoying. I hate it when that happens! What three games are you refering to? I think I could help you if I knew. BTW: nice hard drive, and good size ram. Thanks for correcting yourself :-)
