My 16yr. old just got this HP notbook as a gift yesterday from my Mom. He wants to hook his play station 3 up to it so he can game in 1080P. Is this possible to do or will it work that way? It has an HDMI port on the side and he has an HDMI cable he bought a while ago. I have no clue where to start looking for info on this and don't want him blowing the thing up right away. Mary

I sure hope your mom didn't pay $1350? "don't want him blowing the thing up right away" Does that mean it would be OK in a month or two? lol. What does he want to do, use the laptop screen as a monitor?

Yes she paid that plus the 2yr. warranty. Mom mom is 80 and when she wants it done she wants it done and there is no talking her out of it. The truth is she got a $400 check from publishers clearing house to use in their catalog and decided she wanted to buy him the Dell laptop they were selling for $800 but she would have got $400 off plus shipping but didn't state what the shipping was. I went and looked at the flyer and they were re-furbished very low line laptops with a 10gig hard drive and I forget what else so I told her if you want to get him one it has to be a good one for college later as he may need to run cad programs and we should go to circuit city and talk to someone there so at least I got her to agree to that before she ordered the Dell. He is very good about his electronics and does take care of them. He wants to hook the PS3 up to the lap top so he can use the laptop screen instead of the TV screen so he can use the PS3 in 1080P he says. I may look at forums on the sony site and see if anyone knows. Since the laptop has the HDMI port and he has the HDMI cables the techs thought it should work but I am thinking we need to change a resolution setting or something. I thought maybe I would get a gammer here that was doing this and could help.

I doubt he can do it; it's probably just a HDMI out. To be sure, we'd need the make/model of the laptop. Oh, and never trust "techs" who want to sell you something.

I gave a clickable link in my first post to the make and model on the circuit city site so re-read it. It's an HP pavillion 17" wide screen model DV9548. Mary

Yeah, the only training those "techs" at Circuit City got was a three-day rundown of accessories they can sell, and tactics to sell said accessories. At least that's how I hear it. Back to the topic at hand, the HDMI on the laptop is an output, not input. Apparently, it DOES have a TV tuner, so you could probably use the RCA composite wires. It's a moot point, however, as the lag (about 2 seconds for me) WILL kill his gaming attempts.

OK so what he really needs is a high def TV for the PS3 I guess. He was hoping it would work this way instead of having to buy the flat screen, oh well. Mary
