Not a very good PC for gaming, and no PCI video card will be good enough for games coming out.

Highly recommend you find something else. While you should be able to WoW and CoD2, you won't be able to play the next crop of games coming out, and CoD2 won't be anywhere near a higher res with medium image quality options.

You get what you pay for generally speaking. While I'm not saying you need to spend $2000, you're not gonna get by with that little either.

For under $500, might as well forget it.

I'm not recommending something so you can see them breathing and the hair on their face. I'm recommending something that you can play at least the current and next gen games acceptably with decent image quality, and something you can upgrade easily any component in the machine when inevitably it can't play the games you want to play.

That dell fails on all counts. There's a reason it's under $500. It has integrated graphics, which most likely means you won't be able to upgrade the video card to anything but PCI, which the card you already have that is already having trouble playing games like FEAR and Battlefield 2 is for all intents and purposes the best PCI card available. Translation, if you need something more, you're screwed.

As a Celeron D, it's not flat out terrible, but of all types of processors being produced - Pentiums, Celerons, Athlon 64's, and Semprons, it is the worst of the four.

The case and PSU are most likely proprietary to Dell, so no dice for upgrading the mobo to be able to get a better video card or CPU.

Basically, this computer is a throw away. When you need more, you'll pretty much have to sell it off and buy a whole new PC.

You could build yourself one for probably around $700-800 if you're comfortable assembling it yourself. Otherwise, the guys here have recommended a company I can't remember the name of, but I'm sure they'll post it here soon enough. But it will not be $500 or less, guaranteed.

Now, let's talk about one of these you could build. I would recommend an Athlon 64 3000 Venice Socket 939 CPU, NForce4 Ultra based motherboard, standard case, 6600GT video card in PCI-e, which is the new standard over even AGP (PCI is now 2 gens old). You would be able to interchange any part out. You would be able to put in any current video card out, or new ones coming out for a long time. The CPU could be upgraded to even the dual core X2's or FX-60's simply changing the CPU out, but even if you want to go to a new motherboard, you could do it. You could play any game out at the very least medium image quality and resolution settings.

Spend a little more now, and you'll enjoy the system more, and it will be cheaper to keep the system up to snuff over time since you won't have to keep buying brand new systems.

Still hell bent on getting a dell for supercheap? At the very least do yourself a favor and get one that has an AGP or even better PCIe 16x slot to add a better video card. Such a machine should still have PCI slots to use your current PCI card.

I usually don't recommend any OEM systems, but right now, both CompUSA & BestBuy have the same Compaq Presario SR1720NX on sale for under $400 after rebates. It's a complete system including monitor & printer. It will cost you about $700(+tax) up front, then there's $300 in rebates. The system has a 3500+ Sempron (I assume it's an OEM only CPU). It has 512MB PC3200, 160GB HDD & onboard video. The board is a microATX based on an ATI Xpress 200 chipset, so it's definitely not the greatest, but it does have a PCI-e slot for a video card upgrade. HP/Compaq is very good about fulfilling their rebates (provided everything is submitted correctly) but it will take at least a couple of months to get your checks. For about $150, you could add another 512MB RAM & a semi-decent PCI-e card (plain 6600 or X700, for example).

Hold tight & see what anyone else comes up with...

Personally I like seeing them breath and the hair on their face. :)
Building a gaming machine is not that difficult and lots of guys in this forum can help. But....If you're not up to the task, check out this web page before you buy a Dell. http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/system/cfga64pcie.asp?v=d
$529.00 not bad. Though you still need to purchase a monitor. You can upgrade as you like but with the system as is, it BLOWS away the Dell! And later, when the need requires, you can upgrade with the goodies to keep up with any game.

There is no "modern gaming computer" under 800 bucks, in my opinion.

Save for a real gaming PC or get yourself an xbox360.

I think the answer is........$#@^&*% NO! :) Forget it. I can't imagine why you would want to do that. PCI cards are worthless for gaming nowadays. Check out prices on Video Cards.$44.00 is nothing for the quality you're getting. As a matter of fact, I would upgrade the one with this system to at least the 6600. Which is only $52.00.

Shop around Chairboy and you might find another sytem as good or better. I have not seen one yet though.
Sorry Hero, thats deceiving. The price for the 6600 is an upgrade price from onboard video with the system. See the link above. In other words, the 6600 costs an additional $52.00 when purchasing this system. The price for a 6600 runs around $100.00 when purchased separtely. So it would be cheaper for him to upgrade now rather than later if he purchases this system.

ALL computers have PCI slots. But there are NO good PCI video cards being built anymore. PCI slots should be used for sound cards, modems, network cards, etc...NOT video, not anymore! Get a system that has an AGP slot, or better yet, a PCI-Express slot. The Compaq system I recommended above is MUCH more upgradeable then that Dell. Believe me, if you get the Dell, I guarantee that you'll wish you hadn't. But hey, it's your money to waste...uh, I mean, your mom's...lol
