Hello everyone!!
I am planning to do a BIG PC upgrade...I want to upgrade the CPU, the video card, the RAM, and the hard drives...
These are the specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1600+
VidCard: nVidia GeForce 2 - 32 MB
RAM: 224 (it's really 256, but the video card takes up 32 MB because it's inside the MoBo)
Hard Drives: C: 40 GB D: 40 GB

I want to have some recommendations...
Thanx all!!! ;)

you should get a new RAM upgrade to 512, it rocks that's what i have. Also a 128MB video card will help a lot!

Also your sound card, unless you like it already. the sound audualy 2 or how ever u spell it will help lots in sound.

As far as hard drive goes, im not sure how to replace those but i have a single 120GB HD.

"deluxe."

Hi there...
i assumed your vid card is an onboard video and that's why it takes the amount of your RAM...check your mobo if it has an AGP Port then you could get an AGP video card. Well you sez u wanna do a BIG upgrade rite??...check your mobo if it supports AMD xp2500 barton and uprade your memory to at least 512MB DDR PC3200 and as for the vid card if you wanna play future games like Doom3 and HL2...get either radeon 9800 pro and oc'ed to XT or just get 9800XT...i see that you have a plenty storage so i wouldnt bother to buy another HDD but another 80Gigs will do just fine. Well that's what I can think of rite now...good luck...

How much are you willing to spend? For about $400-$500, you can get a nForce 2 Ultra Motherboard($80), Amd Athlon XP 2500+($80), 512mb DDr400 RAM($90), and a 9800 Pro($210). You should keep the hard drives, unless they are 2mb buffer and you want to upgrade to 8mb buffer 7200rpm sata.

This is my suggestion...

Reconsider buying new HDD (40+40GB is good enough) because usual mobo can support up to 4 drives only. People usual use Primary 4 HDD and Secondary for Other Drives. If u still want to buy then keep the 2nd HDD for backup purposes, up 2 u.

Dont go lesser then 512MB RAM (DDR333/400) cause new games like FarCry, Doom3, Half Life2 takes "A LOT OF" mem.

U r saying that yr GeForce4 is slow?? I think u r using GF4MX because GF4Ti is good enough (For now...). For a Graphic Card go ONLY for Radeon 9600 above or GeForceFX 5700 above. Dont buy other cause u will be sorry 4yr self later, trust me.

I think the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is down to the 200s at newegg.com. I strongly suggest that card, its amazing!!

Also, what Dark29delx was trying to say by "sound audualy 2" was a Creative Labs Audigy 2. This will allow up to 7.1 speakers, Dolgy Digital, EAX, etc. I'm more than happy with my Audigy (1) with 5.1 though.

1. Yes, my GeForce 2 is onboard...

2. Yes, I have GeForce 4 MMX...I didn't know it was slow!! I thought GeForce 4 was the best!!! what's the difference between MMX and the other one???

3. Yes, if I convince my dad, I will spend like 400 dollars...

4. Does Athlon XP 2500+ fit in the same place as 1600+ does??? also, how fast is it???

5. I don't know if I will change the HDD's...

6. I think I will buy all of this:
-Athlon XP 2500+
-GeForce FX or Radeon (which one??)
-two 512 MB chips

Do u think that's good???

Thanx all of u for the suggestions!!! ;)

2. Its Geforce 4 "MX", not "MMX". And there are many different models of Geforce 4 MX including Geforce 4 MX 4000/420/440/460. It should outperform your Geforce 2(although barely). It could've been slower for you either because you did not install your motherboard drivers properly or you did not set video to AGP in Bios and uninstall your integrated video.

4.Yes, XP 1600+ is a Socket A Processor, so a XP 2500+ should also fit as well. But to you must pay attention when you remove it. You'll have to take out the heatsink first, clean the core, and take the chip out(there should be a lock/lever that you must unlock in order to take the chip out.)And How fast? It's very faster than your XP 1600+, thats all I can say =)

6.How much are you willing to spend for a new video card? Not saying FX cards suck(I have one myself...), but you should get a Radeon 9800 Pro which is about $210, and believe me its the best bang for your buck. Or if you want to spend about around $100, go for a cheap Geforce 4 Ti(Much faster than MX) 4200 or a cheap used Radeon 9500 Pro.

Definitely dump the "onboard" or "integrated" video. Even a GeForce4MX is better than that. The GF4MX is a decent way to upgrade an older computer like mine without spending too much cash. For a machine as nice as yours, I'd definitely want better.

Quick explanation: The GeForce4 MX cards are actually based on the GeForce2 chips. They simply aren't made for high-end gaming.

Also dump the onboard sound, if you have that, and install a real sound card. A SoundBlaster Live card is about $35 and an Audigy card is $70. That onboard crap really sucks resources from the rest of the computer. For instance, tests show that onboard sound can slow the computer down by as much as 14%.

Onboard graphics, even the best, are four years behind the capability of a real card.

Best Luck,
Bob

It may be true, perhaps the Geforce 4 MX Series uses the Geforce 2 MX Core but it also uses a different video bios. And because of the video bios it may allow it to reach higher clock speeds at different volt. etc. Just like the Fx 5900 Series, it is possible to flash them to a Fx 5950 Ultra because the Fx 5950 Ultra uses the Fx 5900 Core.

El Trucha,

4.I think you should leave it the way it is for now and take some time to research a bit before you do it. If you mess up or do anything like that(spilled oil on the core, cracked the heatsink, cracked the processor, bent the pins), you can permanently damage your motherboard as well as your processor.

b.t.w i have a pentium processor, not amd. so i do not know how to take the heatsink out or anything. try checking your motherboard/processor manual.

1. So...the GeForce 4 MX that I bought for 75 dollars wasn't for me...I'll have to buy another one...

2.Why everyone has a motherboard manual and I don't???

3. Why can't I just take off the processor??? I did that with an Intel OverDrive and a Pentium 1 and didn't have to do all that...

Thanx all!!! ;)

1.Don't buy another Geforce 4 MX. They are not worth upgrading from a Geforce 2 MX anyways. Get yourself a Geforce 4 Ti 4200, its much much better. =)

2.Did you buy your PC from a retailer? Or did you make it by yourself? All motherboards should have a manual somewhere.

3.Thats probably because a Pentium 1 doesn't really need good cooling. AMD Athlon XP's and Pentium 4's gets really hot though, which is why their heatsinks are much more efficient. Say, for an example, if you were playing Ut2k4 for 2 hours, and your heatsink fell off, you'll probably end up frying your processor. Thats why there are levers and locks to hold the heatsink, making it very hard to remove.

1. OK, but I already have that GeForce 4 MX!! what can I do with it??

2. I bought it from Circuit City...it's a Compaq Presario 6000 (the real name is Presario 6010US)

3. I once was forcing the processor to get out, and I removed only the heatsink...and it had some white glue on it... do I have to remove that to remove the whole processor???

Thanx all!!! ;)

1.Do whatever you want with it..

2.I always hate brand-name computers(Dell, Sony Vaio, Compaq, HP). I really hate them because their motherboards are not from popular manufactorers(Asus, GigaByte, Intel). Their motherboards are also locked, preventing any overclocking and you may also need to buy a specific cpu part for the motherboard. for an example, dell cpu's PSU cannot be replaced with original ones from Antec or other brands. you have to use a specific psu that dell offers at their website. some motherboards may not fit in most cases as well.

3.The white stuff is known as Thermal Compound. It's more of a paste that sticks the heatsink to the core. After you take out the heatsink, you will see Thermal Compound on your Processor Core. You'll have to clean it using dry cloth with rubbing alcolhol. and after that you can take the processor out by unlocking it(there should be some kind of lever to unlock it).

1 & 2. OK

3. No, I only see a metal thing that is sticking the heatsink into the motherboard...there's nothing between the heatsink and the CPU...

You can keep using the MX card if you want to; it's actually what I have. But some new games won't do well on it. For me it's good enough until I build a new computer, which is soon. If you find it's good enough for now, keep it. If you play the latest and greatest games, you'll probably need to upgrade.

If you can postpone upgrading, current high-end components will be cheaper and the next high-end stuff will be better. Sometimes even six months can make a huge difference.

If you can find the fcc number on the motherboard, you can use an online tool to trace the motherboard to a manufacturer. From the maker's website you might be able to download a manual.

Best Wishes,
Bob
