Hey guys,
Does anyone know how much bandwith playing a 64player internet map would use? as currently i have 256kb adsl and i am having problems.

At home a have a wirless network and can be happily playing on bf2 until someone else uses the internet,
even on something such as msn and my ping will go crazy and it becomes unplayable. and therefor only one person can use the internet at the one time, which is very annoying.

so i take it bf2 requires the whole 256kb
any suggesttions to help my playing? i mean it is laggy enough without anyone else on.
thanks in advance.

Im not sure about BF2 but In CSS all you use is like 2-5Kbs down and 3-6 Kbs Upload
But then again going on a packed server always requires kickass system and it could be the server. Normally 64ppl would need like a 150+ ticket rate. In css 40/40 people is useable but the server needs 100 ticket rates, 66 Minimum. Check the server out and also find the lowest ping server when playing. Also steal the internet and say a robber stole your modem (keep it in your room lol)

Instant message clients and other things like that will absolutely destroy your ping. While they might not take up a lot of bandwidth or hog the system with throughput, your router will treat each application with the same priority.

For example, if you're playing BF2 and nobody else is on the internet, the router sees you as the sole priority and will devote all its time to running packets back and forth. However, if another computer in your house connects to, say, Messenger, then the router has to dance back and forth managing both your packets and those of the other computer. As a result, it takes longer for the router to send/receive, which leads to higher ping time.

The only solutions are to make sure you monopolize your internet connection (pretty tough in a household with multiple computers) or to buy a "gaming router", which has special software that prioritizes game packets ahead of any other activity, letting you surf/download/chat while still keeping a crisp ping.
