What would you guys say the best PCIe 16x GFX card for the money is?

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/12...

Since I'm building a new computer I was looking at the PNY GeForce 7600GS video card and was wondering if anyone had some current or previous ownership and point out some highlights OR just recommend a better card for the money?

I think you're shooting yourself in the foot to not at least get something like this...

I bought a 7600GS simply for my wife's system to be able to run Aeroglass GUI in Vista when the time comes to upgrade to that OS, but I also got the card for $50 on a good deal. I would not recommend it for someone playing their fair share of games.

Your video card is the most important component as far as performance goes in most games. A freaking Celeron D with a 7900GT for example would blow the pants off a Core 2 Duo if it were equipped with a 7600GS in most of today's games. I'm not advocating a Celeron D; I'm just illustrating how important the video card is.

Thanks for that.. And I was looking at the 7600GT and a x1800GTO or PRO and I couldn't decide whether it was worth it. And NO WAY IN HELL am I buying a Celeron anything. When I first heard the name Celeron I though to myself... Hmm.. Sounds cheap. And I was right. I mean... MAYBE I might buy a Celeron if I was just going to do basic computer tasks. Nothing really special.

So. Yeah..

You do realize the 7600GS could be considered the Celeron of video cards, right?

Also, keep in mind a name is just a name. If it sounds cheap, it doesn't mean it is. There used to be a time when Celeron was actually the best processor for the buck. Back when the Celeron 300A was released, it performed exceptionally well compared to any AMD processor at the time, held it's own decently against the massively higher priced Pentium II's, and arguably was the chip that really made overclocking mainstream.

While that may not be true today, it could be true down the road. Keep an open mind.

Regardless, read what I said again about putting the right video card on even as weak as a Celeron D processor. If you're spending big time money on a processor, but you're spending this little on a graphics card, if your goal is gaming, your priorities are wrong.

Eh... Will I score decent FPS with an overclocked Pentium D 805 [It has great ability to overclock,] 1 gig of Patriot Signature DDR2 667 RAM and an eVGA GeForce 7600GT?

Oh... I'm also on an ASUS P5L-VM 1394 Motherboard if that helps any. Is that a decent board for overclocking?

Oh right. I'm interested in playing basically any modern PC game of today. Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2, Quake 4 or whatever. =D.

Even the 7600GT will still be a bottleneck. It would perform fine in Half Life 2, but would not be nearly as fast in BF2 or Quake4.

I don't really know what you think is "decent".

Look up benchmarks of the 7600GT to give yourself a realistic idea of the performance you're gonna get.

The 7600GT isn't even supported by BF2. The highest GeForce card that's supported is the GeForce 6800 cards. 7600GT surpasses that. And decent FPS for me is about 40-60 FPS with little degradation. So 40-60 FPS in heavily detailed areas. And the 7600GT is... Wow.. mid-low-range video card. Shocks me. >,<. Well... I'm gonna shoot for the 7900GT anyways. It was recommended to me. And is there a URL where you can like... choose computer components and choose benchmarks to test? That'd be pretty sweet.

It would help if we knew where you got that. And it still doesn't change the fact that they said FX5700 or greater NVidia card, which means a 7900GT is obviously supported.

I got mine straight from EA, and it's what is posted on the box of the game. I'd put far more faith in that.

Mmk. Well. According to the comments in this [http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/battlefield2/video_player.html?id=J3ViljP85bgMuD7c] video the player is using a GeForce 6800XTreme 256mb and he is handling it well.

If you watch it ignore the first 15 seconds.. that's another game I think.

But still. Anyways.

So. Should I shoot for the 7900GT?

reverendbuddy19,

Those were the supported video cards at the time the game was released. There were newer, and better, video cards produced since that time. Do you expect EA to update their system specs every time a new card is produced?
