"Best" is a relative term in a sense because we do not live in a dynamic world after all.

At the present time though & depending on how much you plan on spending (without being unreasonably excessive) - you have the option to go with something from say ~$750 (AMD build) all the way to ~$1500 (Conroe package).

So how much do you have set aside?

Let's say you have $2000 to spend and mind you the laws of diminishing return has a much higher effect at this budget parameters, but that isn't for anybody to enforce, so I'll compile a short list and post back, in the mean time - you can think about it. I'm sure others might come up with related variables too.

Let's see how my list compares to Sabertooth's. Here's a semi-generic list for the 'big 5':

CPU - Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 = $950
Board - based on Intel 975X chipset = $250
RAM - 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-1066 = $375
Video- Radeon X1950XTX = $400
PSU - 650W-700W w/3 or 4 +12v rails = $150

There's $2125 right there & you'll probably wanna add a pair of 150GB 10k RPM Raptors at about $200 a pop. Now you're up to $2525 +/-

And processor that expensive isn't?! ;-)

Honestly, he'd be better off with a $330 processor and crossfire/SLI video cards as far as gaming performance goes...

I was being sarcastic ;-)

This is fantasy system anyway so I guess I should have gone all out with the SLi/Crossfire setup.

I'm still waiting for Sabertooth's response.

Wow.........a lot of responses you got already - I actually got tied up with some other stuff and I never got around to drawing up that list just yet, and I'm not even sure I still want to do it.

I am now thinking shouldn't you should just hold off for the quad cores since they should be coming out very soon anyhow.

But this really isnt how much Im going to spend its about what are the best parts out there today. But if you dont mind compling a list for my price range that would be nice too.

You are partially correct, the E6600 does run @ 2.4GHz. However, the E6300 is factory clocked @ 1.86GHz.

I somehow got the clockspeed for the 6300 mixed up with the 6600.

Thanks for spotting that!
