Best build for gaming?

Specs: Windows Vista
Hi i am looking at building a PC from scratch with gaming in mind and was wondering what the consensus of opinion is regarding the best components.

for example if you are gaming do you need a dual core or is a single core with super fast proccessor enough? or even quad core??

I mean is a 7GHz single core processor not better than a 2.4GHz dual core??

which is better Intel or Athalon?

bottom line i am looking for the fastest highest performance build with the best hardware!

advice on high cost, medium cost and low cost would be appreciated.

"I mean is a 7GHz single core processor not better than a 2.4GHz dual core??"

There is no 7GHz single core CPU & never was...not even close. AMD & Intel hit a wall at about 4GHz so instead of continuing the GHz race, they switched development to multi core CPUs. Single core CPUs have all but disappeared...the ones that are left are reserved for low end PCs.

If you want the best & are willing to pay for it, the Core i7 & an X58 motherboard w/triple channel DDR3 RAM would probably be the way to go. It'll cost you a several grand by the time you're done though.
