Comment:

Will battlefield 2 run on a 1.6 GHz pentium 4 processor with 512 MB of ram and a GeForce FX5500 with 256 RAM built in?

Sorry but i did not purchase the sapphire radeon 9800SE thanks to the replies.

From other reviews i heard that the 5500 will work but with graphic settings on low. Is that true?

Did you find out that your Dell only has PCI slots?

The FX5500 is not officially supported by BF2...some people had gotten it to work, others haven't been as lucky. You'd be taking a chance.

If you have an AGP slot, you'd be better off getting a Radeon 9550 128MB/128-bit card (NOT the SE version)...or possibly the 9600 or 9600Pro. If you can afford it, the 9600XT would be best. 128MB or 256MB doesn't matter with any of these cards. Actually, the 128MB version may be a little faster. Whatever you do, do NOT get a card that uses 64-bit memory.

Try the demo & see what happens. But what if it doesn't work? And why didn't you continue with your other thread & ask BEFORE getting with the FX5500? Hopefully you didn't get the 64-bit version.

You could have gotten this 9600Pro 256MB/128-bit card for about $62 shipped:

The minimum for the 5500.

I doubt it will work with 512mb of RAM, BF2 uses around 675mb alone, my friend's PC crashes after about a minute of playing BF2 giving a memory error as the cause, he only has 512mb of RAM.

Well, I actually haven't purchased the RAM yet, but only the video card and it should be arriving in a week or so. So I currently have 256mb of ram in my desktop and should buy 512mb of ram to equal to 768MB of ram? Should it work then?

Just about, as long as you don't have a lot of programs running, I have 300mb being used at idle and i've stopped a few things. BTW, There is no way on Earth will BF2 work with 256mb of RAM.

"the 9600 wouldn't work as i have a 250 watt power supply"

You are 100% wrong about that. And the 9600 series kicks the crap out of the FX5500. Generally speaking, the FX series sucked. Even the 'lowly' 9550 beats the FX5500 in most applications. FYI, the 9550 is nothing more than an underclocked 9600. It uses the exact same GPU & can be safely overclocked to 9600 speed. I have an Asus 9550GE 128MB/128-bit card in one of my machines & it works great. I'm not a hardcore gamer but I had no probs at all with DOOM3.

Regardless, you made your choice & you'll have to deal with it. Like I said...you took a chance with an unsupported card...it may work, it may not. If it does work, it won't work well.

"Bought the 128-bit version.. whats wrong about the 64-bit?"

The 64-bit version of any video card is 30-40% slower than the same card with 128-bit memory.

I'm not crazy for battlefield2. It's just if it worked, i wouldve bought it. I'm a die-hard counter-strike fan. Nothing comes in between me and my CS 1.6

The point is, you jumped the gun & made a poor choice. The 9600Pro that I posted a link is the same price & would run circles around the FX5500.

I don't know if the translation will come thru, but here's a decent FX5500 vs 9600Pro article:

All i can say is: D@mn.

I made a poor choice. And i can live with the 5500 for a couple of monthes until i have another 60-75 dollars to spend. Then ill get the 9600pro.

Oh, can i change my power supply like a video card?

I wanna switch to a 400 watt.

You'd be wasting your money. You should have bought a better video card to begin with. You have an old Dell that isn't worth much. Put as little money into it as necessary. You don't need a new PSU unless you get a power hungry video card, but that's pointless because you only have a 1.6GHz CPU. A decent 400W PSU will cost you about $50, a decent gaming video card about $75-100, & a new CPU will run another $75-100 (depending on what your Dell board supports). $200-250 is more than that old machine is worth.

Well, i'm doing whatever i can to keep this computer running in great shape. And, right now im doing not such a great job.

What about i purchase somewhere in the near future, a intel pentium 4 processor at 3 GHz. Enough ram to egual to 768mb (512 mb to go) and a 9600PRO video card. Oh, and a new power supply.

PCU $81 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

RAM $50

9600PRO $55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

Thermaltake 430W PSU $40
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

Equals to about $230

I can wait for the money.

You really need to do your homework before wasting any more money. You have an old S478 board based on the Intel 845 chipset. It supports P4 Willamette or Northwood 400FSB CPUs only. The AGP slot runs at 4X (max) & the max amount of memory you can install is 1GB (2 x 512MB).

The other prescott is an S478 board.

Dude, you're not paying attention. Did you even look at the Dell link?

400 FSB CPUs ONLY!

You can NOT run a Prescott & you can NOT run a 533FSB Northwood! It specifically states, "IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® 4 microprocessor that runs at 1.50, 1.60, 1.70, 1.80, 1.90, 2.0, 2.20, or 2.40 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally".

Dude, i've looked at the link many times before.

I have NO idea what those numbers mean. So i can only run an intel pentium 4 processor that runs 1.5-2.4 ghz and 400mhz FSB?

Please explain in a sentence if you could.

I don't know what more I need to explain? Your motherboard only supports the CPUs that are listed at the Dell website. You can only install a CPU "that runs at 1.50, 1.60, 1.70, 1.80, 1.90, 2.0, 2.20, or 2.40GHz". It MUST run at 400FSB & have an L2 cache of "256-KB or 512-KB". In other words, a Northwood or Willamette ONLY, provided it's the 400FSB version. You can NOT run a Prescott.

I can't put it any clearer than that.

I'll make it easy for you. Here's the fastest CPU you can install & don't forget that you'll also have to buy a new heatsink/fan...your old one won't cut it:

http://www.starmicro.net/detail.asp...

Here's a decent 500W PSU for free after rebate, but you've only got a couple of days left:

Thanks for the link. My last questions. If i install 512mb of RAM and the CPU, will i need a new power supply or will i be fine the way it is?

AND. If i have a P4 running at 2.4 GHz, 768mb RAM and a FX5500, what kind of games could i play...

The more I think about it, the more I think I should repeat what I wrote in response #15: "You should have bought a better video card to begin with".

I think you should seriously consider biting the bullet & immediately returning the FX5500...don't even open it! Exchange it for the 9600Pro, drop in another 512MB RAM & be done with it. The CPU upgrade is NOT cost effective. And the only reason I mentioned that 500W PSU was because it's free after rebate. I ordered one myself last week & I don't even need one...lol. Free after rebate & free shipping too? Why the heck not?? It's a good unit with decent specs:
