Hey all,

I recently connected my computer to high speed internet, and was excited about the ability to play Battlefield 2 online. However, I was less than pleased with the performance online. (In single player mode, the game runs great) Despite the fact that I have a cable internet connection, Nvidia 9600 GPU, 4 gigs of ram, and a 2.4 Ghz dual core CPU, whenever I moved my mouse to look at anything, my vision would reposition itself back a little bit, making the game feel somewhat jumpy and laggy. Pretty much everything else in the game also appeared to move like this: running but periodically jumping back a little. The level of jumpiness remained constant regardless of which server I played on.

But I could still play the game to a barely acceptable degree, so I didn't really bother to fix it.

Yesterday, my brother gave me a virus, so I did a reinstall of Windows. One of the first things I did (after getting all drivers and antivirus running) was the install BF2 and test it. And wala, it worked beautifully online, with no jumpiness to be seen.

That is, for the first 4 games.

It happened instantly and without warning: I was walking on top of a building when suddenly my vision started to jump around like crazy, resulting in my walking off the edge and getting sniped. And from then on, I have not been able to play BF2 online due to extreme level of jumpiness I'm getting. It is impossible to aim or even walk in a straight line due to the fact that I can never tell where I'm going or shooting. Again, it doesnt matter which server I play on: it's just as bad everywhere.

I have tried turning off Windows Firewall, tried disabling realtime virus scanning, and tried playing at different graphics levels, but no luck. I had previously thought that the issue might be with our homemade Ethernet connection (faulty wiring or something), but the 5 or so smooth games I played earlier today make me think it's something else.

I'm pretty sure it's not the GPU: it works in single player mode just fine, and runs all other games. Same for the CPU.

I wanna say there's something wrong with my router: but even when I play with my computer directly hooked up to the cable modem, it's the same problem. Could it be my old modem? I think not, due to the fact that for a while we borrowed a new one from our ISP, and BF2 still was jumpy.

I'm stumped on this one, could someone help me out? Considering that I basically built this computer so I could play BF2 online, the problem is highly frustrating to me.

Thank you!

My friend, who tried the game out while I was asleep, reported to me just now that the problem cleared up after a while for him. But when I tried, it was back to it's old laggy norm.

I checked my ping values in-game. And the results are ugly. I generally got between 150 and 450 ping. I didn't do a dedicated check the one time it ran smoothly, so I don't have a comparison. However, I vaguely recall that it was under 70.

Testing my ping against yahoo in command prompt, I get the following data:

I saw on another forum someone suggesting testing my internet bandwidth at http://www.bandwidthplace.com/ Supposedly, Comcast, my ISP, gives me 4.0 mbps

My results:

1.94megabits per second
236.44kilobytes per second

I'm getting this same problem and it's driving me CRAZY. I have a dual core cpu with a Geforce 8800 and 4 gigs of RAM. DON'T tell me it's a problem with my system like EA told me when I asked for support. They're such a garbage company. I think I'm not buying a single EA game again. I've tried everything. In single player it's PERFECT. In multiplayer, my crosshair is bouncing all over the place. It's impossible to score a headshot by actually trying because it bounces off the spot you try to aim at. This is ridiculous.

I forgot to mention I also use Comcast as my ISP. This shouldn't affect a thing. Internet is internet, and this is connection is FAST. In a server where I get 40 ping, this problem still happens. It happens ONLY in BF2 hence it is an EA coding problem that needs to be corrected.

I solved the problem a days after submitting my original problem on this thread:

It turned out another computer on the network running torrents or downloads would cause my internet to lag. After closing them, I was able to get smooth unbouncy play.

Good to know it's a 'lag' problem vs. a hardware problem on my end. I don't have ANYTHING running while I play the game. Only Xfire messenger which I closed and I still have the problem on every server I play. I might have to do some connection tweaking. My PC is totally clean (I maintain it regularly) Thanks for the follow up.
