If it's agp, and your power supply is up to snuff, yes.

The Movie PC:
Pentium III-S CPU: 1.66GHz, 158MHz FSB, 512K
2GB DDR333
7950GT AGP
Vista/XP
X-Fi
Optoma 1280x720 projector
JBL 5.1 audio
and now 89 upconverted WMV-HD flicks

1st you asked about the VIA SG3 Unichrome IGP, then the RADEON HD2400Pro, then the X1050 & now the X800Pro. What is it that you're trying to do? The X800 is almost 2 years old...I picked one up about a month ago for $40. It's a decent card but it won't handle the latest games...it's great for DOOM3 though. I installed Crysis Demo & although it will play it (on the lowest settings), there is occasional lag. I'm not a hardcore gamer but those who are would find it totally unacceptable.

In one of your threads you asked about playing Halo 2 Vista. The keyword is Vista. You apparently have XP so it doesn't really matter what card you get...you're not gonnna play Halo 2 without installing Vista.

You've had a few cards recommended to you (X1650Pro & 7600GS for example) & you were also advised that you're gonna need a new power supply. The Radeon X1950GT or HD2600XT are a couple of other possibilities, but you'd definitely need a new PSU to go along with it. And you only have 512MB RAM? You need at least another 512MB.

I think tyyearthlinknet's real dilemma is his unrealistic hope to turn his 462 system into a contemporary gamer. Unfortunately, the fact that the machine is an OEM only makes the situation even more discouraging.

As it is, the best matching graphics card that he can have on the system without spending too much money, or enduring performance bottlenecks will not get him any closer to playing the latest games adequately on the Hp machine. In this case, anything short of a new system configuration is only going to have a band-aid effect.

My suggestion will be to cut the loss; sell the machine as-is & put the proceeds from the sale toward a better self built gaming machine.

Well you can play halo 2 on XP, But it involves a mod patch to do it.
