Still in my quest to determine what I want in my new pc from CyberPower, i am looking for input on the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro EZ.

So you know, I will be pairing it with the AMD Athlon 64 3000+/512MB/160GB hard drive.

Any input good/bad would help.

If I was you, I'd get the Powercolor's 9800 SE (256-bits) / 128MB and mod it to a 9800 Pro.

Well not all cards are great overclockers so you'll have to take a risk..

whoa slow down dude, Sabertooth, not all 9800SEs are softmoddable in fact very few are
http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=3&var1=101&var2=0

and on top of the poor odds you have, you have to buy a $30 cooler and rig it up

i would suggest to you if you're looking at 9800 series, get a card with 256bit memory as it's far superior to 128bit and to leave 256mb alone, just get 128mb cards they are just as fast but they cost less
the thing is, those cards dont have the power to access the extra video ram
256mb is all marketing, and on top of this even if the card could access it's extra 128mb, games dont use it until doom3 which most people agree, sucks

common sense isn't very common

The odds are not staggering with the right card and the favorite card for the mod is the C3 version of Powercolor's 9800SE. Apparently there are two version out there; the C3L 128-bit and C3 model 256-bit. If you entertain the foggiest doubt about the soft-mod then don't dabble into getting the card which BTW is still a good card without the mod.

Another thing is since it is a soft mod, you are taking little or no warranty risk even when you swap the cooling fan.

In games, most particularly the Doom 3 benchmarks, the 256mb edition of the 9800 pro didn't really outstrip the 9800 128mb edition.

I'm using the 9800 pro 128 right now, and its most definitly a winner. A great "bang-for-the-buck" performer, it runs Doom 3 decently (though not to my preferances) and plays every other game quite well.

Half-Life 2 will most likely play well with the 9800 because at the time of the source engine's creation the highest end radeon was a 9800xt (remember that voucher ati-hal-life promotion)

Lol.... yea i'm seeing all these new vid cards with SE, LE, EZ
initials attached to the end of their names....

Makes u want to stick with regular Pro and Geforce
naming schemes.
