I am going to buy a video card next Friday and I want to know which I should get. I am upgrading from a TI4600 because I want higher FPS in Planetside mostly. The Radeon 9800(non-pro) and Geforce FX 5900(non-ultra) are both $299 locally and I don't know which I would be happier with. Compatibility with games is most important and quality and FPS are second and third. My performance now sucks though.

The Ati card has the best hardware but also has lots of driver problems.Nvidias drivers are solid and have much better compatability with a lot of games. If Ati could get its software corrected, there would be no contest.

i would personally go with the nvidia. IMO they are equally the same cards power wise but as said previously the ATI have crappy drivers and nvidia's are really good and make your card perform alot better. IMO i'd get the NVIDIA.
hope you make the right choice for yourself,

Well, I personally favor nVidia but after reading the latest things on Tomshardware I am thinking I will have to try out the 9800. I wouldn't think drivers could improve the 5900's performance enough to make it catch up to the 9800 in Half Life 2. I could be wrong though. The Half Life 2 benchmarks are pretty bad looking for nVidia. I wish they had gotten to use the new drivers they talk about.

No kidding about the half life 2!!!
The 9600Pro (that's right, the 9600Pro) kicks the 5900 Ultra's ass! It's amazing! Go to anandtech.com to see that.
