Ok so this recently began occuring. Im playing this online game and suddenly my FPS drops to like 1 or 2 fps! and my comp is lagging not the not my internet, and Im pretty sure of that. It's so unplayable and frustrating. The other day when I escaped from the game I brought up task manager and it was saying that "winword.exe" was using 95% of cpu, but I wasnt running word. So that as probably causing my lag that day. But today "windword.exe" wasnt running and it was still lagging, so I shut off zone alarm completely and the lag went away kind of not really. Ok so bottom line can any of you inform me what maybe causing my problem? I scanned for viruses/trojans/spyware and nothing. My only option I can think off is that I need to defragment my drive? but I just barely got a new HDD and installed windows fresh. So im really lost. Also my computer seems to like just lag out when somebody logs on my yahoo messenger, lag I mean if Im playing music, my music will skip. So there is something wrong here and I dont know what. Thanks in advanced.

That wouldn't cause his FPS to go down to 1 or 2. Even after a fresh install of Windows, it's still a good idea to defrag.

Click start, run, and type msconfig and shut down anything that is running that you dont want to run, see if that does anything.

If you have a p4 1.3GHz, depending on the games you're playing, that might explain something. You also have only 640M RAM.

What games are you playing?

Hi

j1mm3h are you using word as email editor?

if so turn the setting off ,

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;241425

i take it the game runs fine when not online?

If your sure its not your pc then remember
for online games, true game speed is determined by such factors eg the hops to the server your connecting to those ms add up!, your bandwidth , upload /download speed, your pc graphics/cpu throughput,
etc, the game will only go as quick as the info is sent to it, two way communication process going on there!.

anything interfering then fps can drop as the game 'pauses'.

Hello everybody thanks for the responses. Sorry Im a little late. Ok well Im sure its not my connection because I just know I dont know how to explain it. It just recently started happening. No im not using email editor. Yeah I know my specs are rather low, but my game ran fine before, no extreme lag or nothing.(the game is Rise of Nations by the way) Just until recently maybe like less than a week ago it just all of a sudden droooooops, fps that is. I dont know if anybody read the end of my question in my 1st post where I said that sometimes when Im on yahoo messenger and somebody comes online my computer just lags out, my music skips and my mouse skips. I dont know if thats connected to the issue of my game problem? Im using Zone Alarm too, if that matters? Thanks for the help

"internet downloads and surf speed all seem normal"

That's throughput, not response time.

Well.. if you have limewire.. it might cause that problem..
i had a problem similiar to that.

when i used to have limewire id quit the program and itd start up again.
i checked my task manager and the CPU use was at 98%!
i searched the guerilla forums and there was a solution..

i cant remember though..

it was 1 year back..

you can end the task from task manager though.

try that in-game.

It could be your internet connection, and it may also how your processor is handling the game and connection, what do you computer experts think? It may yet be another problem.
