Folks, I got a nice shot in the arm from my company, and I guess I can upgrade my graphic card with some of the extra bonus (minus a bit for the wifey).

My box is homemade, and a while back I got the Radeon 9800Pro for AGP. The monitor is an 19" Dell 1905 LCD (1280x1024).

I mostly surf and game with this machine, and the games (crack) of late are City of Heroes/Villains, Titan Quest and HOMM V.

1) Would a new GC for about $175 be that much better for the type of games I run/monitor that I use over the 9800? Is there one cheaper than the $175 that would lap the 9800?

2) If so, what brand and model card?

3) Also, is an Radeon/NVidia card built by those "other" companies (eVGA, Foxconn, BFG, etc.) essentially as good, quality wise?

TIA for your input.

Best,
- Rob

If your budget is $175, then the 7600gt AGP will be the best choice for you...

the 7600gt is over-rated. but then again so was the 7800gs. if u must must buy one now get the x850pro from here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...
only $140. i was only saying to wait cause the x1950pro is coming on agp end of this month for around $220. that should shake some prices up. not to mention the whole holiday season sales thing.

X850PRO only has 12 pipeline just same as the 7600gt. However, X850PRO does not support SM3.0. If you want to save money, then X800GTO is the best choice for you for <$95...

As far as the X1950pro AGP goes, having a 3000+ CPU will be a bottleneck plus you going to need a better power supply if your current one is generic brand 400watts...

Nonsense. An X1950Pro AGP would be the perfect match for a 64-bit 3000+. Bottlenecking, if it's even present, would be much too small to worry about.

Of course, this 1950Pro AGP will probably be in the $200-250 range. Assuming that the 7600GT AGP is as fast as the PCIe version, then it would be the best choice, being slightly faster than even the 7800GS (non "Plus" version).

My Super P3:
Pentium III-S 1.4GHz @ 1.5GHz, 512K L2
X800XT All-in-wonder, overclocked to 580/600.
250GB HD
2 gigs of PC2100 RAM
QDI Advance 12 mobo, this baby rocks!
