I just bought an Ati 9800 pro 128mb card off a friend. he had it for a couple of years and i wanted to take it off his hands and OC it.

I just went out and bought a heat sinc and fan or a Zalman VF700-Cu and Now its installed and working..

WHAT SHOULD I OC IT TO?
BTW.its(Core 378.00MHz and Memory 337.50MHz)

Also. Is there any program some one can list or link to a program that moniters its GPU Temp? --- I think it has that LM69 chip thingy so i dunt need to go into details bout that. THX

You can only monitor the GPU temp if the card has a factory installed temp sensor...otherwise you'd have to install one yourself. How much did you pay for the card + the Zalman? For about $50-60 you could get a brand new card that will blow it away.

The 9800Pro was a great card in it's day (I still have one) but even overclocked, it won't keep up with many of the lower end gaming cards of today. It's biggest drawbacks are it only has 8 pipes & it uses DDR RAM rather than faster GDDR2 or much faster GDDR3.

Overclocking and 9800Pros do not mix. I've overclocked several of those cards, and only one made it up to 420/360.

Of course, that was with the default, undersized heatsink. With a better cooler, the core should handle a little more.

Be very cautious about the memory though. I've heard several reports of the 9800Pro's memory slowly crapping out, at stock speed, when playing Doom III. This game apparently accessed VRAM in a way that really stressed memory chips that were already at the top of their frequency range.

I bought fan cuz i was pretty sure it was universal and i would slap it on a better ATI once i upgrade the vid card...

Only now i realise that ime guna need to probably replace my mother board and processor(AMD 3400 64bit)cuz the next video cards up are all PCI-E! (witch my mother board does not support). Sigh... i sopose ime guna have to wait untill late october for new vid acrds to roll of the line so all the other ones might drop a $. LOL

ne way thx, n if you have ne more advise on this or why my cards only gettin like 410//350 OC with artifacts, tell me plz!

BTW Jam...

Was that link full instructions on how to convert 9800 pro to an XT?.. if it is, then thx. ive benn also planning to do that.

As for how much i payed for the card... i bought it off my friedn about a year an a half ago for $25. When i went to put it into my comp, i opened my cas to find my PC'c motherboard DIDNT SUPPORT AGP, OR PCI-E!

It only have like 3 pci slots and that was pretty much it.

only recently i tryed putting my first computer together and i realised i still had that card hidden away!

Again, the 9800 Pro pretty much sucks at overclocking.

If your card can't even handle 410/350 without artifacting, then there's no way that it'll flash to a 9800XT (which uses even higher core/ram speeds).

The flash only works with 256MB 9800 Pro cards with the R360 core.
