Yes, but it shouldn't really be a long-term solution, far too much dust will find it's way in.

Some people are like Slinkies, not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs...

"would leaving the comp open cause any damage?"

If your case has cooling fans, they're designed to run in a closed system, similar to ductwork...in one end & out the other. If you open the side, you greatly diminish their effectiveness.

There's a greater potential for damage if you leave the side panel off...more dust, possiblity of something falling inside, curious fingers or pets (lol). As hooner said, it's not adviseable for a "long-term solution", but it's your rig

get you some arctic silver thermal paste- a good heatsink/fan for the chip- apply it just like these instructions at this link
http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

i use AS3 and an xaser hsf on an athlon 2500+
1-80mm fan sucking air in front, 1-80mm fan blowing air out top back, 1-80mm fan pulling air in the side onto the processor and 1-50 or 60mm fan right by the processor blowing out the back and my temps are around 32°c idle - 45°c under gaming.

Shut that case!
