so i'm thinking of buying a radeon 9800 pro to upgrade my system, but my mobo is kinda old, and it only supports AGP 4X not 8X.
now if i run radeon 9800 pro on 4X, will it be slower than if i bought a new motherboard and ran it on 8X?
will it matter at all? please help

Most generally people see very little performance difference (if any) when running an 8x card at 4x speed.

Buy the card you will be happy u did.

What card are you replacing?

good old g4 ti4200 :D
well it's good to know that i won't be needing a new mobo...
is there any sites that show the performance comparison though? i like to see some numbers lol
i mean...does the 9800 pro cap the AGP 4X at all? Or is the AGP 8X thing just a money scheme >_>

I dont think you will be able to notice a difference. Depends what u play and how high the res and graphics are though.

In any case ive come across this same situation, but with AGP motherboards going out I think im gonna save up and wait to get a whole new comp. If u have no plans to do that anytime soon then it would work great.

you won't notice a difference. Try www.tomshardware.com for a graph..i think its part of the article on PCI express..

Definitely go with a new 8X AGP motherboard, the extra 1/2 frame performance boost is worth it, lol.

I ran my old system at AGPx8.
Now with my current system (same GPU),I'm running it at AGPx4.There is no loss in performance. As a matter of fact,I scored 200 points higher in 3dmark03 while running at AGPx4,though that doesn't really mean much (:.

Nevermind, the response was in huan's duplicate thread in another forum. I though I was having a brain for a moment back there.
