hi. i have just recently formatted my computer from vista back to xp b/c it simply is horrible for gaming IMO. Ive had my XFX 8800gts 320mb for about 6 months and ive barely had ne problems with it. Im havin a very frustrating situation where after i get into a game of bf2, with all settings/resolution on high, my entire system locks up about 5 minutes into gameplay. ive had this problem before when i first installed my VGA but i fixed it by lowering the clock and memory settings in nTune. i tried the same thing this time but no luck. my psu puts out 560 watts with 400 watts minimum in order for my vga to work. should i look into buying a new PSU? or what. i have updated my drivers for my vga, nforce, and directx also.
He probably meant 12 volt rails but it could be many things. Driver issues with your card, or overheating for example. But like Jam said, remove the side of your case and get the make and model and all the specs for your psu and post back.
A 560 watt PSU from some no name company is worse then a 400 watt from a reputable company.

my nvidia drivers are the latest and my temperatures are normal, but please keep in mind i had this problem before and resolved it on its own, idk how but up untill i got xp back its been a pita again
i fixed it. i used rivatuner and "underclocked" the memory and core bus to a certain point and put the fans up to 90%. although i still think this is not normal at all. i do have the latest bf2 patch and its not punkbuster cuz this happens on single player also. i guess i can do for now. thanx for all of your support.
If you're happy with that "fix", that's OK with me. Personally, I'd try to find the *real* fix. Your card was designed to run at a certain core/memory speed & it shouldn't have to be underclocked to run stably.
You do have the 6-pin PCI-e power plug connected to the card, right?
yea i have the 6 pin pci-e plug connected, i have 2 and tried both but same result. do u think it could be my processor fan since it falls off of where it should be and its kinda just hanging around inside my case? i tried everything to get it in the normal secure positon but if thats not the cause then i wouldnt care. thanks for all ur help

Have you try to clean out the dusts accumlated on the fan/heatsink? Seems to me you may have an overheating problem...

Your idle temperature may be ok but have you checked for loading temperature?

there is no dust on the fan/heatsink. ive had this problem when i first installed the card brand new 6 months ago so its not a dust issue. thanx for ur help tho...is there any difference in performance when decreasing the core/memory clock by 100-200?
lol yea i kno it sounds crazy but the fan thats supposed to attach to this metal part of my computer (im not sure if its the processor) just hangs in the center of my case dangling from a cable. i try to get it in place but it just falls off when i turn my computer upright. i feel the metal part ontop of the processor and it gets really hot but i always thought that was normal? anyways today i detached the fan and took the knot out of the cable to give the fan more flexibility to try to position around the processor and its actually staying on now. i dont really think that would be causing it since it has nothing to do with the video card itself directly. what do u all think?
My guess is that your problem isn't related to the video card at all. Your CPU isn't being properly cooled & it's overheating under load...that's why the system is locking up after just a few minutes of game play.
That "dangling fan" MUST be attached to the heatsink (if that's where it belongs?)
The CPU fan should have screw holes to attach it to the heatsink. Its a very important part of keeping your processor from overheating. Don't play any more games until its firmly screwed into place or you'll have a dead CPU very soon.

There ya go...the problem is your CPU, not your video card. That fan MUST be securely attached to the heatsink. There appears to be mounting holes in the corners, so if you can't get the fan to snap in place securely (it's NOT magnetic!), you'll have to get 4 of the proper type/length screws & then screw it down to the heatsink. Otherwise, you're gonna have to buy a whole new HSF. Here's one possibilty:
ok well i looked and examined it and under the fan there are 4 spots where small little latches should be, and as it turns out 3 out of the 4 are broken off lmao. so now im going to tigerdirect and pickin out a good heatsink/fan. thanx for all of your help
well i got my new fan yesterday and not a single lockup since the installation. all my gpu clocks are running at normal speed and i can finally enjoy bf2 pr again
