Reply: (edit)if there is a difference between the cards, it's not noticable to the human eye; only in benchmark results. i read many articles though that say that the nvidia card is the better. my 2 cents. <shad>

Reply: (edit)Last month I decided it was time to leave Nvidia and get myself an X800 Pro as in the past I've always gone to Nvidia only to find an ATI card afterwards kicking Nvidia's ass. I called my local supplier, he told me he had one X800 left and he would hold on to it until I got there. While I was stood at the counter waiting for the young lady to get my x800 pro from the back, I couldn't help but notice, on the shelf behind the counter, this MASSIVE 'Sparkle' box with all these impressive graphics on it. The young lady then appeared with my X800 pro in this box that was the same size as the one my previous FX5900XT came in. I thought Hmmm, and said to the lady, can I just have a look at that 'Sparkle' 6800 GT before I part with my money. We had both the X800 and 6800 side by side and boxes open. Both cards looked great but the 6800 just looked so much more and after discussing and reading the specs on the boxes.... yes you've guessed it... the 6800 GT prevailed and I handed my plastic to the young lady. Now I've never been one to judge a book by it's cover but in this case it was like comparing something that looked a $million to something that looked like $half million. Luckily, I had made the right choice. I have a few gaming friends that have all recently bought new cards. Some of them are ATI straight down the line and although very happy with there new X800, they all agree that us with the 6800's have slightly better cards. I'm sure we've all read somewhere or other that the Nvidia would be great for Doom3 and the ATI was going to be the card for HL2, well I just bought HL2 and the settings can't go high enough. My card loves it but I suppose it's only a DX7 engine so it's nothing to boast about. To conclude (FINALLY) If your an avid ATI fan then go with the X800 pro because even though the 6800 GT slightly out does the ATI card, your really not going to notice the difference at all. On the other hand, if your an Nivida fan... well... I think I've already made your choice!!! Reply: (edit)that was the x800 pro, which i agree isn't as good as the 6800gt, but the x800 XT is better than the x800 pro, and i think the XT rivals the GT (not sayin it's BETTER, just that it's too close to call).

Reply: (edit)However, ATi still has the Direct X edge so whatever you get is up to you. You'll lose one thing and gain another. But it's not much to lose or gain since these cards are so freakin' fast right now. If this means anything, Nvidia seems to have better product support. ATi's drivers have been slighty better than Nvidia's for a while now, though. But all that could change in a blink of an eye.

Reply: (edit)I'd have to disagree with Nuke, here at the expert gaming PC Labs, we prefer ATI cards because of their smaller size, less power consumption, comparable (and in some cases better) performance than the 6800's and much quieter noise output. Those 6800's are nice no doubt, but ATI has REALLY shown up Nvidia by putting out a product based on the original R300 core that competes solidly and much more elegantly with an entirely new generation of Nvidia core and chipsets.

Reply: (edit)Thats interesting as we have found the opposite to be true, the ATI cards now come with an extra power slot whereas the Nvidia still get enough voltage via the AGP port. Plus the utilisation of fixel shader 3 technology and open GL support give Nvidia a winning edge, at least that is what our benchmarks suggest http://www.nukecomputers.com
