hi, one of my friend asked me if he should get the geforce 6600GT or geforce 6800(not GT). i got a 6800 just a month ago. i would choose 6800, but this is not a normal 6600, its a 6600GT. what does the GT do? faster speed?

i personally would go with the 6800. you can unlock the extra pipes and virtually turn it into a gt or ultra.
the "gt" on the 6600 means that the core is clocked at 500mhz instead of the 300mhz on the "non-gt". the ram is a considerable amount faster though.
what i am saying is don't get the 6600gt if you can afford a 6800. you will be able to get the 6800 to over or near a 6800gt or ultra by unlocking the pipes and overclocking it with coolbits. make sure you get the the 256bit ram if you have a choice between 128 and 256.
or you could tell your friend to save up his money for the 7800 that is comming out later this month, or so i've heard.

the 6600gt and 6800 are pretty much at the same price as of now, give or take a few dollars, but as time goes on and faster cards come out price will only drop. As pheonix states the 6800 is the way to go.
THe 6600gt uses DDR3 instead of the standard DDR that the 6800 uses (the gt and ultra use DDR3), also has higher core and memory clock speed then the 6800. The 6600GT is way faster than the last generation high-end cards, such as the 9800xt and 5950xt.
Despite the fact that the 6600gt uses DDR3 and has higher speeds, it still performs slower then the 6800, the 256bit memory interface on the 6800 compensates for the bandwidth lost of not using DDR3 and you get double the pipe lines, thats 16 in all including the four locked ones. Plus there is one locked vertex pipeline. All that said, I believe the 6800 is the one to get for up coming games.

If it costs more than $100, it costs too much...LMAO!

LOL...consider this!
While spending $400 is in my opinion absurd, spending over $100 on a graphics card actually makes a lot of sense for many gamers.
My ATI Radeon 9800 Pro lasted me almost 2 years. I bought it for $220. Two years ago, you couldn't buy a Radeon 9600 Pro for $100 or less, so your best bet would have probably been a 9500 non pro. My 9800 Pro was still performing great, and I only changed it out so I could go PCI-e.
It still performs better than any current sub $100 card available. Not bad for $250, and I sold it for $120 (granted, the buyer shouldn't have paid me that much, but hey, so I paid a mere $30 to go to my new 6600GT PCI-e). I got to play HL2 @ 1024x768 full tilt, Doom 3 at almost full tilt at the same resolution, and everything else at even better frame rates during that time. I think that's money well spent.
In my opinion, today you get similar value in a 6600GT. Much over the price of $160-170, and I think the law of diminishing returns sets in, and you're really not getting good bang for your buck.

heropsycho,
Obviously there was a bit of sarcasm in my post, but your point is well made.

You, sarcastic? NO WAY! ;-)
Yeah, wasn't attacking your idea because it's a bad one. I'd rather buy a new $60 card like a 9550 every year than $400 on a card every year or two.
It really depends on how well you want your games to run. I want 1024x768 minimum with the eye candy I can actually see on when I play games. If I can get away with 1280x1024, even better! Operation Flashpoint is a much better game at 1600x1200 for spotting and shooting things from long distance than 1024x768. :-)

Go with the 6800 the 6600 has a 128-bit bus and the 6800 has a 256-bit bus therefore doubling the transfer rate.
