Subject: 64MB Nvidia Geforce2 MX 400 UpgradeOS: Windows XP proCPU/Ram: 1.4Ghz Athlon, 768 DDR ra |
Comment: Hi, Have a computer thats going on 4 years years now and I'm looking to up upgrade my 64MB Nvidia Geforce2 MX 400 graphics card. I have a CRT monitor, Asus A7A266 motherboard and recently added an extra 512 DDR PC2100 ram and installed Win XP pro. Looking to spend up to £100/$200, does anyone have any recommendations that are compatible with this system? How much better can you go until the processor speed starts to hold it back? Many Thanks

Reply: (edit)Best route is to upgrade not just the graphics card, but the motherboard, CPU and the ram too (PC2100 won't cut it). If a major upgrade is not your intent at this time, I suggest getting a 9550 or 9600 Pro and that's it, check out Newegg's refurbished section for some good deals. Do not type anything in this space.

Reply: (edit)I can't afford a major overhaul at the moment, but thanks for the advice about the graphics card. Just out of interest, would a newer motherboard and CPU be able to run the old ram, or are the speeds not compatible. Thanks again

Reply: (edit)"Just out of interest, would a newer motherboard and CPU be able to run the old ram, or are the speeds not compatible" You could run your old parts on a new board...you just wouldn't be able to take advantage of the new board's potential. If you got an nForce2 board that's capable of 200MHz+ FSB, you might be able to reclock your 1400MHz Athlon T-bird from 10.5 x 133MHz to 7.0 x 200MHz, but your PC2100 would hold you back...you'd need PC3200 RAM. Look what $33 will get you: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-138-227R&type=Refurbished Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 768MB PC3200 Asus A9550 128MB/128-bit WinME/WinXP Pro
