Hello. I am currently looking to buy a new graphics card. Just out of curiosty, will I really benefit in forking over the extra money to get a 512 card. My price range is about 200-300...maybe 350. I am looking for a PCI-Express card. Yes my motherboard has the slot. I am trying to hold off on buying a new one but having an integrated one is a pain. Its the ATI Xpress 200 if you wanted to know. I can't even run Black and White 2 on lowest settings and lowest resolution. Well it runs...not very well though. At my old house I had an ATI X700 which nearly ran it at full smoothly.

P.S. I'm willing to overclock if its possible with integrated so that I can hold out on upgrading longer for better cards.

Questions(If you don't want to read.):
Is 512 MB really worth the extra money?
Whats a good card on a 200-300...350 maybe price range?

Thank you for any help in advance.

A 7600GT ought to be good enough for your Getaway.

A P4-style chip running at 2.66GHz isn't all that great, dual core or not.

I wouldn't go above the 7600GT or X1800GTO.

"Manufacturer/Model: Gateway"

Add in additional Gayway el-cheapo power supply, $350 is still more than enough for ur entire system... Anyways, P4 running at 2.66Ghz should not get more than x1600pro or 6600gt, else it'll be bottleneck by ur CPU and your gg (godly gayway) power supply...

You are going to have to gut out the system to turn it into anything worth playing on. The Pentium D 805 sucks, unless you can overclock the hell out of in which you can't and It's not even a good dual core porcessor ontop of that. You will need at least a Pentium D 945 or higher. You are also going to need to add another gig of ram and a better psu say an atx 2.0 psu ontop of a graphics card for this to become some type of gaming machine that you want it to be.

Sorry to be blunt but what you bought is basicly an office type of pc the way it's setup now.

Well I got this comp for free...so yea. I have another one with like a 3.4 ghz processor, 1024 ram, but its agp. Oh and its a Sony Vaio. Would it be more beneficial to upgrade that one? Another gig of ram...i already have 1 gig. If I would have bought a computer...it would not have been this one. And the bluntness is appreciated. I like just getting to the point. Thanks for all the help so far, keep it coming please.

Questions:
512 or 256?
Should i just save for a new computer?

Yes if it's an pentium 4, 3.4ghz processor. If you got that other pc for free sell it on ebay or in your local paper and take the money you got from it and put it towards upgrades on your other pc, like more ram, a nice agp graphics card like a 7800 series or a better PSU. You could prob sell that system as is for around 400. That's enough to get a better psu and a nice graphics card. Just remember to check what you have psu wise in your Sony if it's an ATX 1.0 and anything under at least 12v 20/A, and 430w then you will have to get a better psu if you want a nice agp card to go along with it.

Attempting to put any upgrads into that free system, would be a stupid move, because you will be spending as much money if not more then what it's worth on alone.

Since everyone seems to be avoiding the Main subject qrustion, I'll do the honors and attempt to answer. 256Mb vs 512Mb only really makes a noticeable difference at extremely high resolution, we are talking megapixes here, that for the most part only a hand full of games support, res's as high as 2560x1600. You would need an XHD monitor just to take advantage of these types of resolutions. Even high demanding modern games with ridiculously high textures maps do not take advandage of 512MB of v-ram. So, to the point, as of now, 512mb is just a marketing ploy to get sales from the ignorant who think more is better.

Thank you very much Mr. Noobie. I was hoping to get that answered eventually. I very much appreciate it. That makes alot of sense. I'm thinking I've just decided on buying a new computer...don't know what brand. It can't be much more than 1000 bucks. Thats about my limit there. If anyone has any suggestions on what to buy please let me know. Or if I should just build my own. Thanks for the help again.

The way I have always looked at an investmant such as buying or building a personal computing is to know first its purpose. What do I want to do with this machine?

In my case, a little bit of everything, watching, decoding, encoding DVDs, playing modern, realistic games; surfing the net, ripping my CD collection, the ocasional image, video editing, and playing around with 3D creation, such as 3D Studio Max, Poser, and Daz3D.

All of the above requires a good amount of horse power, a three year old computer is just not going to cut it. It took me a few weeks of research to really learn about the appropriate hardward that would fit my needs. I decided the bast way to accomplish this was to build my own system. For two main reasons, to save money and to pick & choose only the components I needed. It also allowed me to gain valuable knowledge of how to assemble and configure hardware. Also, installing the Operating System with no Free junkware that Prebuilt companies throw in is how I prefer it anyway.

So take your time ,do your research, ask questions, post at forums, and then carefully decide what you want and why you want it.

Before eating, always take a little time to thank the food.
