Would help to know the rest of your system specs, but I would say absolutely. However, there may be other upgrades that would make more of a difference spending on what specs your system is otherwise, namesly the video card.

These days a Gig of ram is the defacto minimum amount of RAM recommended for most gaming systems. If you actually have a "gaming" system, your games (including F.E.A.R) will definitely benefit from the extra 512MB.

Viva la resistonce! Fight the lag! If u have a P4 system with an i865 chipset or higher, then your missing out. I recall when FarCry came out my game play was sub-par, even though I had the best video-card at the time, the 9800 paired up with a shinny new Prescott. My preformance was held back by my RAM, or lack there of. Once i upgraded to a gig, dual channel kicked in, and WOW, what a differnce! I was multitasking like nobody's business, that alone doubled my bandwitdh. Reading and writting to RAM is the only way to go. With DDR being so cheap these days, there is no excuse not to have a gig in your "gaming system".

Take it from Mr.Noobie, do yourself a favor and get a gig.

You do realize dual channel doesn't make much difference, right? The reason you got that performance increase was you had double the memory.

If it's obvious dual channel doesn't do much, why are you emphasizing it?!

okay, allow me to rivise my reply.

"The reason you got that performance increase was you had double the memory."

Yes you are correct, hence why I said, "My preformance was held back by my RAM, or lack there of."

As an incidental, secondary side-effect of upgrading to a Gig of RAM, Dual Channel kicked in, which provides the reading and writting of each RAM stick simontaniously *emphasise*.
I felt obligated to state this since he has a P4 system which has a Quad Pumped FSB, 800Mhz equaling 6400mb/s, thus my reason why I pointed out Dual Channel, to run insync with the FSB, Which is desired.

I give creadit to a Gig of RAm for boosting my preformance, more then I do Dual Channel. But, Like I said, he will kill two birds with one stone when he upgrades.

There, is that better?

I didn't. There's no sense in emphasizing dual channel. It doesn't matter.

What chipsets were the two different motherboards?

Guarantee you the performance difference came from having a better performing chipset. If you had single channel on your current motherbosrd with the same amount of memory (ie. a single 1GB stick instead of 2x512M), it wouldn't be much of a difference.

hero is right, this is more of a sizzle than it is steak. To most users, the benefit of dual channel configuration is minute overall. At the same time, that isn't to say that you shouldn't implement it.

If you have a system that supports it, go for it. In computing every little bit of performance tweak counts provided there isn't a corresponding side effect to the adjustment.

Dual vs Single
