Hello, I just purchased a new computer,(950 AMD THunderbird w/ Win XP) it had the Sound Blaster PCI 128 Card 'IN' the system, but not any of the optional software porgrams installed for it, such as "Wave Studio'.

I found an old Sound Blaster PC 128 Installation CD (most likely designed for WIndows 98 or ME) and I did a full install of the software in the CD, Immediatly after rebooting, I noticed that my system was 'Lagging up', as in RIGHT after Windows XP would boot up, it would complete processes very slow one minute, anf fast the other, and whenever I did something where normally a sound would play, such as turn on an MP3, Windows would just lag out, I would move my mouse with my hand, but not see the corrolative movements on the screen, then after a while of constant data processing, it would finally complete the task.. and what's worse, I wouldnt get any sound at all.

I tried:
-Uninstalling the software, and undating the Driver, but to no avail, still had the same problem,

-I checked to see if ALL the plugs were in the right place.. and they are.. volume is turned up, Please help>>

Nevermind, XP has built in System-Restore feature; I fixed it, but thanks anyways...

Put it like this:
+AMD AthlonXP 1700+
+SB PCI 128 "Digital + SPDIF"
+256MB PC2100
+Ge-Force 4

and no matter what i do, sound crackles/distort etc...(with the latest drivers) anyway here's a list of compatible sound cards (creative) in Windows XP:

=========================
Creative Technology
SB Live
Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM)
Game Port for Creative

If the sounds crackles and distorts, it might be something as simple as a dodgy speaker cable, or connection.

as an example, my brother drove himself nuts trying to fix his sound card, only to eventually discover that his cat had chewed through a speaker cable! No cat treats in that house for a while...

Check all of the speaker cables, and the connections at the points where plugs meet sockets - if the plug is dirty, or no longer properly connectied to the wire, you might have a problem.

Of course, it could be something else, but sometimes it's worth checking out the simple things.

I had the same lagging problem when I tried to use the installation CD, and system restore didnt work, so I just had to remove the device, shutdown, remove physically the device, and restart. Then shutdown and reinstall.

The reason I did this was because, even when I have sound, the midi functions doesnt work perfectly. I use a lot cakewalk, cubase, and other midi software, and cant get it to work fine. This card has 2 wavetable options (the good wavetable and the bad one) and XP recognizes only the bad one.

If any of you know how to get the card to fully work on XP, I'd be happy to know!! Thanks.

Same problem here: sound crackles and is distorted at times. It was working just fine with Windows 98, but this evening I installed the Windows XP home upgrade, and now the sound is occasionally (abt every 10-30 seconds) a distorted whistle. I downloaded the newest SB PCI 128 drivers, but they don't seem to help. And I'm sure it's not cables or speakers because 1.) it worked fine under Win98, and 2.) the speakers still work fine when I plug them into my Linux box! Anyway, hope someone comes up with some ideas on this...

Update-
After Win XP upgrade from Win 98, the SB PCI 128 card was spewing distorted sound every couple of seconds. After finding a few references to the problem, I tried going into the BIOS on the ASUS motherboard and changing the "PCI Latency Timer" setting - it fixed the problem, and now it works great.

I'm having the same problem with the soundcard/windowsXP distortion.

Went into Bios to change the PCI latency timer as suggested but didn't know what value to put in. Tried a few numbers but still had the same problem.

What value do I use, anyone?

Set the latency timer in the bios from 32 to 64. I'ts the only solution I found.
