Win 2000 pro drivers for External CD RW

I recentky got a new laptop with Win 2000 Pro on it and the drivers that game with my Hp Cd-Rw 8300e are for windows 98 only. I tried the river section of this site and downloade the drivers for my op and cd rw but the laptop still only recognises it as an ordinary cd-rom drive
Please help as im going away monday and wont have access to the internet for several weeks so im in a slight hurry
