will not burn or play cds

My computer will not burn cds or even detect a cd when it is in the driver. What is the problem?

A few possibilities, in no particular order:
1. The drive could be faulty. 2. The drives controller could be faulty. 3. The drives cable could be damaged. 4. The drives data and/or power cables could be loose. 5. The drives controller could be disabled in BIOS. 6. If it is an ATAPI drive it could be jumpered incorrectly. 7. Some windows files could be corrupt and thus not running the hardware. 8. The drive could be disabled via the device manager (if applicable in vista). 9. Drivers for the drives controller may be needed but not installed(long shot).
