I've always said I'm no Systems Administrator, but I am happy to say I managed to build a working computer. All's well except for one thing - I can't get my Canon 1220U scanner installed. Trying to update the drivers brings up the error message "The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance". Canon's site and their techs both say to run their TWAIN Driver remover, then extract the proper drivers from another downloaded app. I don't know if it's just Canon's lack of knowledge on the issue, but their claim is, because I built the computer myself, I must've done something wrong - left something out. (I'll leave my response to THAT out of here!)
I doubt I left something out - my guess is that I shouldn't have removed the TWAIN drivers... Has anybody dealt with this isuue before (especially with a Canon product)? The search engines seems to have quite a few issues that deal with this error message with regards to audio and imaging devices. Just wish I could make sense of this- The scanner DID work when I was running an ME/2000 dual boot...

I have attempted to install a nikon coolpix 2100 and it fails for function driver not specified. Using windows 2000 and a usb port - any ideas.

Hehe, hate to add fuel to the fire, but I am recieving this error when connecting a Maxtor USB 2.0 drive to my system. Everything was working fine until last week, when I first got this message ""the installation failed because a function driver
was not specified for this device instance". I have found through trial and error that USB1.1 devices will work on the same port, so the port is still working. ASUS were no help to me, directing me to uninstall the drivers and reinstall, which did nothing. Then flashed the BIOS which also did not resolve the problem. Then I reinstalled Win2000 this morning as a last resort, and am still receiving this error. Seems to me as if the motherboard might be a bit broken for all of us? Well, i'm off to buy a PCI USB 2.0 card, hopefully that should be a good work around. Good luck!

With my Canon N1240U scanner, I am having exactly the same problem with "The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance." I tried all the remedies mentioned above and none have worked. About ready to throw the scanner in the trash. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!
