I was tring to install a new plug and play USB HP deskjet 5440 printer onto my laptop.
The hardware wizard was failing to install the hardware each time it tried. I got help from HP IT and one of the things he told me to do is uninstall all the USB items in the device manager and reeboot. After I did that I went to the device manager and there were yellow question marks as icons for the Unniversal Serial Bus Controller items.
And the sub items that pop down when you hit the plus sign on the Universal Serial Bus Controller list item had the same yellow question marks and also had exclamation marks over the question mark.
I plugged my AKAI DPS24 (24 track recording studio console) into the USB to do some work on some music and the computer no longer even recognised the 24 track that was workng fine just an hour before. I tried all sorts of uninstall and reinstalls and trying to get the wizard to use all sorts of drivers to install the new hardware. Because everytime I started the computer the "Found New Hardware Wizard" would come up even though there was nothing plugged into the USB at all. I tried telling it to install from all sorts of locals on the computer and from driver disks for my recording console.
I tried system restore to get back to before I did all that stuff to the computer that made it no longer compatible with my USB DPS 24. The restore failed several times and no changes were made. How do I get back to the point when my USB was working fine?
The IT guy told me to contact Dell but my computers not under any warenty anymore.
I talked to some friends and they said to insert the Windows Driver CD that came with my computer when the New Hardware Wizard pops up and asks for the software.
The CD's seem to have been lost during a move from Texas so I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what might be wrong or what to do or where to get the nessasary software to get my USB's working again.
Sorry for the length of this post. It's just been a long process so far.
Any advice and help in greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what eror code you mean. Where should the error code pop up?

I don't know what to type into GooGle to find what I need.
Please advise.
Thanks for the reply.
I've searched all around with no luck.
I'm not very good at this.
