I have two machines here. Both are identical. Both have USB 2.0 ports. We have recently purchased a MP3 player which requires USB 2.0.
Both machines are running Windows XP Pro with service pack 2.
The MP3 player on one machine, but not the other. The hardware was recognized without any issues on the problem machine until the user reverted to a previous version of the USB driver files. Now Windows XP Pro percieves the USB ports on the mother board as 1.1 even though they are not. The problem of course now is that the MP3 player will not function properly.
I have reinstalled the USB drivers on the problem machine several times as well as going into DOS to verify date and size of the USB driver system files to see that they are identical to the working machine.
I have uninstalled all of the USB drivers in the system section as well and with a reboot let the machine reinstall them.
I have disabled and re-enabled the USB 2.0 support in the BIOS.
I have done a repaired install of XP on the problem machine, but this did not solve the problem.
I believe the problem is a registry entry, but doing a comparison between the two I have yet to find a discrepancy between them.
I believe this problem is in the registry because, the user of the problem computer reverted to a pervious version of the USB driver which resulted in the current problem. I don't know WHAT possessed this person to do this, but they did.
The system reported drivers are the correct version. PLEASE do not ask me to go through the system and hit 'check for updated driver'. This has not fixed the problem.
I really do NOT want to format this machine and reinstall everything from scratch. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. If there is additional information I can provide please let me know.
Thank you in advance!

What devices do you see under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in Device Manager?
Try deleting the drivers after uninstalling. Uninstalling doesn't necesarily delete them, just removes the registry entries. I'm not sure about USB drivers, but I had a similar problem some years ago with other device drivers and had to manually delete fo force Windows to go through the full install.
You may well have to boot into Recovery Console to do this.

Well... we're going to do the format and reinstall. Nothing else seems to be working. Thank you for the suggestions.
