Comment:

i will try to explain my problem again maybe i will be more clear this time:

when I conntect a usb device (my camera / usb key) it to my computer. I was always able to see it automatically via My Computer as a removable disk when connected and turned on. Well, now I it is NOT recognized in My Computer. The computer makes that bell sound and said the new device was properly installed and ready to use, but it doesn't appear.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP3. Any suggestions to get my computer to show me my camera / usb key again, like before?

thanks for your help...

Michael

... hi "robobob" ... try this... go to "start" run (type) regedit

... [press ENTER] ... then follow this path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor <<< click that folder

... in the "right" screen which value does it show by "start"

... just the value in (*) brackets

... ya it should be three... try this, download. extract the files
then open/run "usbdeview" with one usb device "in"

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdev...

... if you can see the usb drive in the program highlight it (left click) .. then right click and select an option ie "open drive"

... experiment a little ... post back results

no option seems to do anything.
when i go into properties of the drive i see there is no drive letter assigned to it.
but there is no way i can assign one myself.

... with one usb device plugged in open/run "USBDeview"
press "Print Screen" key (with printer off) go to "Paint" to the "edit" tab and "paste" then to "file" tab "save as" ...jpg

... upload to: http://tinypic.com/ ....post link here

... Also in "USBDeview" on the "yes' right click "open in regedit"... then again "print screen" same as before, upload image and post "link" here with the other.

... worth a try download this:

http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html

... see what you can do... I am hoping that you will be able to resolve this... this is a xp issue... I tend to whip in/out my (hot swapping) usb stick a few times and that normally sorts mine.

... ok ..." I'll eat my hat"...

... what about tapping "F8" key @ boot-up select "safe mode"

... and follow the pop-up to "system restore"

... restore it to a "point" date before you had this issue

... if this works (it should) please "robobob" send the registry snapshot of it fixed .... so I can compare thx in advance

sorry for not replaying sooner.
i must say i'm so anxious to use system restore.
i'm afraid it will screw up things even more.
so i will try to find a way out of this.
if noting will work i might try the restore thing.
and i'll let you know how it went.

thanks a lot for your help + time.

well i tried to apply the system restore.
i followed the on screen instructions.
chose an earlier restore point.
but then i get to the screen where it says that to start i need to click "next" i click it and nothing happens.
i can click it as many times as i want and the computer does nothing.
i tried 10 different restore point and i can't get it to work

i guess i will just have to install windows again...

is there a way to update/obain the usb drivers.
i looked at microsoft & ibm and couldn'f find any...

i must also say that by now i cheacked a bunch of usb devices (all workd before and still work with other computers)
the only one doing problems are usbkey devices like cardreaders, cameras, ipods.
other things like printer & scanners work just fine...
