I have a Gateway Tablet PC, and I did the System Restore it has build it(I was having major issues with slowness, not shutting down and freezing even though virus protection said I was fine.) So I did the restore and everything else is working wonderfully, except the volume. There is no toolbar icon to change it and in the 'start, control panel, sounds speech and audio devices, sounds and audio devices' everything is grayed out, I cannot change anything exept the tab 'sounds' sound scheme. It is set to windows default now, before it was blank. But this has not helped any. I have tried to go to the Device manager and change/update, but no luck. Everything says the drivers are working, but when I click 'advanced volume controls' a beep from the PC itself(not the speakers) goes off then a pop-up says "there are no active mixer devices available. to install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and other hardware, and then click add hardware." That does not work. What is the real problem and how do I fix it? Sound used to work just fine before I did they restore. Please help! I've read other articles and they have gotten me know where, so please don't tell me to read those instead.

Go to Device Manager, find your sound card, right click on it, click Uninstall, then click OK and reboot. Windows should reinstall it when you boot back up, and in doing so this sometimes tends to reset things that are out of whack.

I installed win update 3. The it started to install audio but then this poped up "cannot start this hardware. there was a problem installing this hardware: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. This device cannot start. (Code 10)
What do I do now?

If the driver is installed, it should be listed under "Sound, video and game controllers" in Device Manager. List all that's in that category.

IDT High Definition Audio CODEC-had yellow '!' icon, reinstalled it and nothing, adio codecs, ;egacy video capture devices, media control devices, vedio codecs.

there is also a category called 'other devices' that has the yellow '!' now too.
modem device on high definition audio bus, sm bus controller, video controller, video controller(vga compatible)

downloaded and tried to install it from the web. now it says '_exiterror: error=device object not present, restart the system and run setup again'
??

Hmm it looks like the drivers aren't installed. Did you try to install them from Gateway's website?

I try to click on the 'place volume icon in the task bar' but i get this 'windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the volume control program has not been installed. to install it, use add/remove programs in control panel.' but there isnt "volume control program" anywhere to be found. how do i fix this?

Sorry for my belated reply.
To be honest, I'm running out of ideas. I don't know what the error could have been referring to in Add/Remove Programs.
I have a few more shots in the dark.
You didn't mention whether or not you downloaded the sound drivers from Gateway's website. If you haven't tried this yet, this is an option. If you can't find it on Gateway's site, reply back with the exact model of your tablet PC and I'll try to find it for ya.
The next idea is kinda involved but it may work. Don't reboot the computer until you've completed every step up until step 5.
1. Go to C:\Windows\system32 and rename hal.dll to hal.dll.old.
2. Go to C:\Windows\Driver Cache and look for sp2.cab or sp3.cab. If you see sp3.cab, double-click on it. If you only see sp2.cab, double click it instead. If you see both, double click sp3.cab.
3. If when you double click on sp2.cab or sp3.cab you see a window pop up that says "Open With..." open the cab file in a program such as WinZip, 7-Zip, or IZarc.
4. Look for hal.dll in the cab file and extract it to C:\Windows\system32.
5. Now you may reboot your computer. When the PC boots back to the desktop, Windows should reinstall all your drivers. You shouldn't need to supply any driver discs. This process can sometimes reset things that aren't right.

I did install the drive from gateways website, that is the new error I am getting now. It's not that big of an issue, just really annoying to have to go to the control panel every time I want to change the volume some.

So the sound works, you're just getting that error you mentioned above?
Do you have a Windows XP Installation disc? If so, pop it in the CD Drive if your tablet PC has one. Now go to Start>Run, type cmd and press enter. A black window should appear.
Type the following that's in bold, pressing enter after each line:
D: (Change D to whatever your CDROM's drive letter is)
cd i386
EXPAND sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exeYou should get a message saying that one file was copied. Now restart your computer.
If you don't have a Windows XP install disc, reply back with what service pack you have.

So I take it that you don't have a Windows XP disc.
Download this file and save it to C:\Windows\System32:

I had the same problem with MyMixer, tried creating some ringtones but did an idiotic thing (messed with the registry) and completely busted sndvol32. Thankfully Rayburn's solution fixed it.
