i'm really getting desperate now. i have windows xp. the sound driver i had was a yamaha ac-xg one. when i turn off the computer the driver seems to uninstall itself and under sound devices it says there is no playback device. i tried reinstalling it, but everytime i turn it off it does the same. then i tried deleting the yamaha driver and letting widows automatically install the default (intel) driver. when i rebooted the computer it seemed to work - it said it found a new audio device and the sound seemed to work. but then when i turned it off and back again it did the same.
