Comment: I had trouble with my os, and sound card, with my dell inspiron 4000 notebook after i sent it into dell to have the motherboard replaced when my power supply broke the mall end on the board. i got it back and reinstalled windows me on my computer and the sound never worked again. i tried to install the driver again, and it didn't work. I downloaded the driver(for ESS Maestro PCI) online, and tried to install that driver. Now it says, "Windows stopped responding while attempting to start this device, and therefore will never attempt to start this device again(Code 11)". So, in conclusion, I have no sound and its not accepting any drivers. Is my sound card "dead"? Let me know if i can be saved.
