let me explain a little first. I wanted to make it easier for my self if i ever needed to reinstall windows. So i found a program called Driver Max, this allowed me to export/save all my drivers to a flash drive. Sounds great right? It isn't. After i exported all my drivers i tried to burn a movie, when i select my DVD burner i get a message from nero "please enter a valid target folder" (it did work right before instlling that turd of a program) the correct destination drive is selected.
So i looked in the device manager and the DVD RW is now a CD rom. GREAT!!! The Driver Max change my DVD driver to a CD rom driver. So i go to sony's website. i find a firmware update, but no drivers. I emailed sony 3 days ago and no response. The only disk i have is to reinstall Nero. I don't think i lost it but it may be a possibility.
Does any one know or have a driver that will work?
Whatever the issue is, it won't be solved by installing a manufacturer's driver (not that there would likely be one) - Windows supplies its own, so there would have been little point in exporting
You didn't need to install a driver in the first place, in order for the drive to work originally, right?
One thing worth trying is to remove the drive's entry from device manager, reboot and allow Windows to detect it and reinstall - - otherwise, you might consider posting in the General Hardware or XP forum

umm.. i don't remember if i had to install a driver or not. I'm about 95% sure that I had to but it has been a while (over 2 years). Windows does detect the drive but installs it as a cd rom. I will try the general hardware form.
Windows has used its own, inbuilt drivers for IDE optical drives since Win95 - it's unlikely that you installed one.
I don't believe the entry in Device Manager is a cause for alarm - if anything, it sounds like more of a problem with Nero
When exporting drivers, it's often best to skip those provided by M$, since they're normally reinstalled by the OS
Here's the definitive page for that item - plenty of software bundled with the drive, but no mention of driver disks
Sure, repost in General Hardware, this forum isn't terribly active, and mainly serves to help those inexperienced at finding drivers online

I wondered if it was nero also but i uninstalled it and reinstalled it and i got the same message. I started another post i hopes that i get a resolution. If i do then i can let you know if you want me to.
That is if your still reading these posts. I stand corrected. It was nero. I dl dvd clone and it worked fine. I went to nero's website and had to dl this cleaning tool that removed all the reg enteries. i just assumed that it was a driver. problem solved. thanks for all your in put.
That's good - after all, it was Nero that was generating the error message
I'm glad it all worked out
