PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! :)
After downloading the latest S3 Virge/DX 375 drivers*, i was stuck for hours, but solved the problem:
The solution was simply to select the proper monitor. (Read display.txt in windows folder)
The problem of course was that Gates removed my moniter type from the list that Windows provides, though WIN 95 had my moniter listed, "Default Monitor" was all i got when i installed WIN 98. And along with that, i lost my refresh rate adjustment.
So the solution? I went to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display; Settings, Advanced, Monitor; Change, Next, Display a list....., Have disk.
Now heres the crucial step: i pointed to the windows\inf directory ON MY WINDOWS 95 which i keep installed on a spare hard disk. There is there some files named monotor.inf monitor1.inf etc which contain the drivers for older moniters that win98 wont list.
The monitor.inf files are also in the precopy2.cab file under the win95 directory on the windows 95 CD. You gotta extract them with the extract command (Go to Start, Run, type "command", hit enter, type in "extract /?", hit enter)
On another note, i found a S3 refresh utility on the net, but doesnt seem to work for me. But the above solution solved my problem and gave me back my refresh rate adjustments.

From the display.txt file (in windows directory):
"You must select a monitor in order to set refresh rates. If Monitor is set to [unknown monitor], no custom refresh rates are available.
Refresh rates are affected by the capabilities of both the display adapter and the monitor. Windows 98 Second Edition makes available all the refresh rates within the combined capabilities of the display adapter and the monitor."
Read that file for more info not covered here. But for a laugh and an example of my frustration with windows 98 stuff, i post this quote from the file!:
"If Windows 98 Second Edition does not contain a driver for your monitor type, select one of the standard monitor types instead. This selection will not adversely affect the performance or quality of the Windows 98 Second Edition display output."
