I have very slow dial-up connection. More updates are still going on under Windows Update. In fact, what has been disturbing is that the computer speakers have ceased working although sound can be heard through headphone.

No difference!
Mass Storage controller is still not working.
Computer speakers are not working either, although sound can be heard on headphone.

What is it due to?

..."Mass storage controller"... is not a sound issue

... if the headphones work try plugging in the "external"(?) speaker jack into headphone plug!

... when was the last time you tried the blue link suggestion in #Respones number 1?

... that will wipe your drive "as new" to factory condition

... as it'll delete all other files you'll need to save them on cd/DVD or other back-up device

... or is this a new xp install? ... the more info you tell us the more we'll be able to help you

... if it is a new install....as you had'nt had service packs, did you use the method as described using your recovery partition?
