I'm trying to get a computer running. Its been sitting at my girl friends house since before I knew her. when i try to boot it shows me a dos prompt. I guess I can just try to reinstall windows and that would work. But I don't know what devices are in the machine: soundcard, videocard, etc. . .
Is there a way to find out which devices are on the machine? Or a way to find out which drivers I need?

More than likely, you'll need to do this the hard way:
Pull all the cards and get all the names and numbers off the cards and chipsets.
Do the same with the motherboard.
Then it's time for google and driverguide.
It is possible she has install media for all or some of this stuff. Have her dig out any diskettes and cd's that may apply to the hardware in that machine.
