Reply: (edit)A driver is a program which allows the Operating System to interact with a hardware device (such as a printer). Printers vary in many different ways and the OS needs to know what features are available and how to access them. For example a photo printer has different settings for ink coverage based upon the substrate used (plain paper, photo paper, etc.) The driver allows windows to give you an interface to make those selections and to send the right commands to the printer.
