My 4801 came with a Compaq 7000us. It had the same problem, but now it does not recognize ANY disc that I insert. I'll keep you informed if I find out anything. Please keep me in the loop too.

Hello friends,

I have also completely reinstalled my Compaq but the Cd Philips device started ok may be because I use NT 4.0 and not XP or 2000.

I searched in google, newsgroups etc. and have found those two links:
http://extranet.fujitsu-siemens.com/support/consumer-public/others.html?hyperwave=action%3Dplain.action

and

http://www.cdr.cz/rekordery/philips/PCRW804K.html.

For some reason I found nothing on www.phil ips.com which should be the first and best place to check.

I did not succeed in installing this flashtool however...

regards,
ivo

HI PEEPS!!!!

FOR THOSE OF YOU HAVE A PROBLEMS WITH COMPUTERS, DO NOT EVER BUY COMPAQ!!!
Even though it's brand name, the company makes its own hardware. Compaq always have problems with their own cmos and WINDOWS. It's on the news a few times that consumers had a hard time trying to make it run properly.

My bro bought a computer, and it was hewlet packard pentium 4. It ran good, until I use the net. When finish dialing to the internet, you wont be able to use your keyboard. Dont you think that's lame??? You could use it after you disconnect. I restarted the computer with my own windows(tested with Win98, Me, 2000) This time, the burner would not work. No matter what burning software I use, it's labeled as a CD-ROM instead of CDR.

These companies are ripping you off. If you look inside the computer, you don't see much on the motherboard. Just bunch of wires that connects to it. All the stuffs are built in(which is a good quality in sound, video, and a few others).

IT'S BEST IF YOU BUY THE PARTS, AND PAY FOR LABOR. EITHER THAT OR BUY IT FROM A SMALL COMPANY/STORE.

I HOPE U GUYS LEARN YOUR LESSON.

YOU COULD BUY BRAND NAME PARTS, BUT NOT COMPUTERS!!!!

i called philips about about philips cdd4801 and they no support at all for that writer. in fact, the guy i talk to said they that they dont offer driver upgrades for most of their currently supported hardware and he had no sugestions on where to find it if you need it. so you are basicly on your own if you need a philips product driver. ive searched for hours on the net and ive given up. good luck to the rest of you.

I have the same problem. I did a clean install of WinXP pro (after i upgraded me to xp pro it was running slow so i wiped my drive and did a clean install) I had already burnt at least 3 discs after my clean install using roxio easy cd creator 5 then all of a sudden it stopped reading or recognizing ANY disc i insert into it. It even hangs at startup if there is a disc in the drive because it cant read the disc. WinXP recognizes the drive as a phillips cdd4801 and tries to read discs i put in but when i go to my computer to open the disc it says there is no disc or it is in a format windows doesnt recognize even when they are 1 week old comercially pressed discs. Any help is appreciated email me at bose301s@msn.com.

False alarm for me. My Phillips 4801 stopped working after I installed Windows XP Professional Edition and I blamed it on XP. (After all my HP printer and scanner stopped working after switching to XP.) Turned out, however, my wife had purchased cd-rws for high-speed 7x burners, while my Compaq 5000 series came with a 4x. After switching back to 4x cd-rs, it worked fine.

I recently installed Win XP Pro, and now my computer does not recognize the drive as a CD/RW and only a regular CD ROM drive. Any suggestions about how to fix this? It's driving me nuts!

Thanks

I am having problems with 850MB CDRs(99 Min). I have a CDD4801 and wasn't sure if it was the drive that can't handle those new CDRs or if it ws the software. The CDRs came from CompUSA and I got them at the end of the summer. The 700 MB CDRs seem to work fine. Any clues? Thanks.
