Subject: Problem with Compaq Philips CDD4801
Comment:

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 (5WV296) that came with a Philips CDD4801 CD-R/RW.
I've been having some trouble with my computer, and now although my burner works, it is only recognized as a 2x burner, when it has been an 8x4x32 all along. Any idea how to correct this?

Also, my CDROM (COMPAQ SC-140S) is not recognizing any disc that is placed into it. I haven't looked for its driver yet(I was looking for one for my Philips CDD4801 when I came across this page), so I'll go do that now...

Please post if solution is found.

I found a driver and it works so far. I found it on the following page:
http://www.cdr.cz/rekordery/philips/PCRW804K.html
I just clicked on "FlashTool 3.1.0.0" link and it worked for me. I can't read the page because it is written is some way cool foreign language but sometimes you have to trust other people on the net.

If you like english and have no taste for adventure try this page:

I have Presario 5000 5VW280. Same CD R/RW same problems. My OS is Windows Me.
My particular problem is with my backup CDs where I burned my docs. I was able to reload from the CDs in June 2001 and also in August, but now it cannot see the CD. I changed the speed to 2x and it saw a CD but could not access the files.
My DVD drive reads most of the CDs that the CDD does not - except for the important missing data!
I'll try Ryan and Trentina's tips.

I have a Compaq Presario 5BW284 (5000 Series), and the same CDD4801 burner. To burn i use Roxio Easy CD Creator Platinum 5.02b --

my problem is that when i put in Memorex brand CD-R's, and try to burn something to them, i get an error that says "POWER CALLIBRATION ERROR".. This happens on, i'd say approx. 3 our of 5 Memorex CDs that I try to burn.

When i use another Brand of CD-R (TDK Brand), I can burn with no problems at all.

Does anybody know what i can do to fix this problem? I Really like the Memorex CDs, and i have alot of faith in them, but i'm really having alot of trouble burning to them!

Also, another problem that i have with some Memorex CD's is that it will take my computer up-to about 4 or 5 minutes to recognize that I've put in a CD-R.. the TDK brand CDs are recognized about 10 seconds after I put them in..

Also, a question that i have, and have not been able to find an answer for anywhere, is this: what does "Sync Data Transfer" mean? Should it be checked or unchecked when i look at my CD-RW drive's properties? right now i have it unchecked

If anybody can help me in ANY way to solve these problems, PLEASE PLEASE e-mail me -- laffy4k@hotmail.com

Thanks!

I have compaq 5012, Windows ME and the same cd rom drive, Philips cdd4801 cd-r/rw.

My problem is that after 20 minutes to an hour or so, the cd rom drive starts making these clickng noises and my computer freezes. Also, the cd rom drive won't read any CDs anymore.

It's been doing this for two weeks. Is there a way to fix this problem? should i get another cd rom drive?

the cdd4801 works just fine under XP. i used to own a HP burner wich in fact was a phillips cdd4801 burner. it came with a medion (lifetec) computer. Lifetec has a biosupdate on their site. my burner was updated with this biosupdate and wordked just fine under xp. (if you'll open v22.cvt in notepad you will see that this bios update is ment for a phillips cdd4801 burner, in fact almost every HP burner is made by philips and sometimes sony)

don't let them fool ya, don't by another one it isn't neccesary :)

I had the same problem and I figured out that it was the firmware. The problem that most folks are having is that the CDRW is actually made by Phillips and then resold to companies that put their name on it. If you cut and paste this URL it takes you to Phillips website where you can download the Firmware in English. Do not download it from anywhere else, since it might be a virus.
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/dcbint?mode=files&modname=PCRW804K&moddesc=CDRW+Internal+Drive&moreList=0¤tIndexName=0&searchstring=PCRW804K&confval=PCRW804K&country=&prevcy=&totrec=3&lang=eng&screen=&tmplt=pcstuff&s=

Yes I know it looks long but it takes you right where you want to go. Best of luck to all. Hope this helps

My cd rom drive was stuck with the disk holder in the 'out ' position
and
would not go back in. The indicator light does not go on when I push the button.
What do you think is wrong. I've not used it that much
so it shouldn't be worn out. This happened right after I did a system
restore. (Prior to that it was working fine.) Could this be part of the problem?

Can anyone shed any light on this problem? I'd appreciate it.
