Please help cant find a drive

I just bought a new hard drive and installed windows xp because the hard drive wouldn't work. I can't save things on a floppy disk. i can't seem to find the floppy/a drive icon in 'my computer'. when I check the device manager, there is a 'standard floppy disk controller', so I don't really know what's wrong. I tried uninstalling this standard floppy disk controller. Then I went to 'add hardware' and my computer detected the drive. I can't really understand. Can anyone help me?
