Subject: Perplexed over driver updating ! |
Comment: In my system I have an ATI RADEON 32MB PCI Graphic's card. I also have the ATI TV WONDER USB Edition. Currently I have DirectX 8.0 installed.Everything is working well , except for one rather trivial feature in the T.V Wonder. When you click on a certain icon on the TV Display control , you are suppose to get a thumbnail veiw of stations , which then by clicking on it brings you to that station. Well anyway that feature will not work. I sent ATI a request for help and they replied that I should upgrade the driver for the ATI Muti-Media Center ? When reading on the driver update it says that DirectX 8.1 is required. Iam a little reluctant to do this DiretX upgrade because of the many post I have read from others having major problems after a 8.1 upgrade. DirectX has no uninstall option and I read where it may even cause you to have to reinstall your O/S ! Iam looking for opinions here, to upgrade or forget the little thumbnail feature and leave well enough alone. FYI> Pentium III 750MHZ 256MB RAM O/S WindowsMe 30Gig H.D. I appreciate all that reply for their time. Thanks to All,Nick

Reply: (edit)directX 8.1 is a good system and nessacery for your card but if worst comes to worst and you do need to reinstall your OS you might wanna try a different version of Windoze. ME is really bad (or was for me) and i would recomend you got to 98se or upgrade to Win2k or XP ditch the OS and most of your problems will be over m8. DirectX 8.1 is avalible from microsoft.com and once downloaded will install its self etc etc. i have DirectX 8.1 and an ATi 8500 chipset board and got no problems with it at all. if you go for an OS upgrade to put the disc in the drive after booting and it will be all kool. if going back to 98 put a 98 start up disk in A:\ and the 98 CD and @the prompt type a:\ press Enter and then type format c:/s you will need to respond at the prompt (either yes or no) and it will format c:\ disk... but remember to backup everything on disc and have copies of all your programs as they will ALL be lost in the format... DirectX 8.1 is not as bad as people say and worth a download
