Ok this is going to be a long one, since I am having a lot of trouble. Yesterday my brother reinstalled Windows 98 and reconfigured my computer. My mom had a lot of stupid programs that were not of any use to me and he did this to cut back on programs and free up space. When he reinstalled windows and my programs that I needed, my cable modem did not work. Now it does, but only through the USB port, and not the ethernet connection. I initionally had RoadRunner service, and they installed the ethernet card and set up my computer to use a cable modem, but I moved to a place that uses Charter cable. When Charter came to install my cable, I already purchased a Motorola Cable Modem (Surfboad Model SB5100)and the technition just plugged in a cd disk and set up the ip config with charter and called them to recognize the modem and ip and I was set. I was using the old ethernet card from RoadRunner and the ethernet connection worked. A week went by and thats when my brother reconfigured my computer and now my ethernet connection doesn't work, only my usb port. When I talked to Charter cable they told me to use the Floppy disk that Roadrunner gave me to install the drivers so I did. The driver 10/100 PCI ethernet adapter was installed, so my network adapters has Dial-Up adapter, Motorola SURFboard SB5100 USB Cable Modem, and PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter for adapters, but under other devices I get a ?! and it is in front of PCI Serial Controller. I have tried to put in my windows 98 cd to search for a driver to install this and it says unable to find driver. I put in the disk from RoadRunner and it is unable to find a driver. I put in the motherboard disk (charter told me it might be in here), and in it there is a chipset driver, audio driver, network driver, and a utilies driver. When I go down the list it says No Detected Device under Audio Driver and Network Driver. Also I have PC/AT Enhanced Keyboard (101/102-key)When I go and put the cd in for the keyboard it is a VT82C686A Chipset Driver and I dont know my Audio Driver or Network Driver. It has 5 choices to choose from for both drivers with the cd, but I don't know if I should install them or leave them be, and if they have anything to do with my PCI Serial Controller not allowing me to use my ethernet card for my cable modem and allowing me to get a faster connection than my USB Port provides. Pretty much I dont know what to do from here. I would like to know how my computer can install a Driver for my PCI Serial Controller, and what disks or actions I will need to take in order to correct this ?! I see by other devices under Device Manager. Any help would be much appreciated.

I had the same problem thinking that it is a PCI serial controller. Aztech MDP3858u modem is what I was dealing with. I has an on-board serial controller. But what is really is called is a MDP3858 PCI Modem Enumerator.
I found a driver at driver.com. MDP3858u for win9x and now I am using that very same modem to send this message. I am now looking for a unix/linux driver for the same modem.
Reply if you need to know more.
