Comment:

I just completed an "FDISK" and install of WinME. I am continually getting "a driver for this device can not be found". Under device manager, I have a yellow question mark next to other devices and PCI Communicaion Device. I don't know what device is being referenced. The only info listed under properties for the PCI is:

device type: other devices
manufacturer:none specified
Harware version: 112.

I have read some posts that indicate this may be a modem driver missing. I have 2 ethernet cards installed for networking: VIA PCI 10/100mb Fast Ethernet Adapter and Realtek RTL8029(AS)PCI Ethernet Adapter.

I am seeking some assistance in: 1) identifying which PCI device is in question and 2)how do I fix it.

his is a bit long but I wanted t give as much info as I could t assist you in assiting me.

Thanks for your help.

I have an almost identical situation and am looking for help too. I've tried using a 3Com CD and Win98 CD for drivers but no luck. I'm going to try different PCI slots but I expect the same result. I've even rebuilt the pc and still get the "unknown pci communication device", along with the modem not being recognized. Any answers/ideas welcome!

YEP, me too!

Our modem (PCT789T) is plugged in to a PCI socket. It is the only PCI device. The computer does not find the modem if we ask it to look, and if the coputer is switched on we get the "New Hardware found - PCI Communications device".
Whats going on?

I'm sorry, I wish I could help all ya'll, but I'm having the same problem!!! ....Only I installed Win 98SE.

I have the Realtek RTL8029(AS)PCI Ethernet Adapter but not the other one you mentioned.

In addition, the following have exclamation marks beside them: PCI Ethernet Controller & PCI Input controller.

I'm really green at this and don't know what I'm doing! I did a clean install (first time I've ever tried this) and thought this might help my computer problems! Ha!

I just hope this is a learning experience.

Thanks for any help.

Sandra

The PCI communication device that windows is finding is for your modem. If you know what model modem is installed in your computer, then you can usually find and download the appropriate driver from either the manufacturer or elsewhere on the web. Hope this helps.

I encounted PCI communication Device driver "not found" problem after I formatted my C:drive and reinstall Win98 SE. I solve this problem after I re-installed the fax/voice modem driver though I have a network card installed and don't use the modem anymore. My computer is OK now. Maybe you can try to find out your old moderm driver card or download from the producer's website.

Hi Jeremy

PCI Communication Device Vendor ID 13F6 Device ID 0211 Subsystem ID 021113F6 belongs to C-Media Electronics Inc (according to http://www.plasma-online.com/) but how did you find out the vendor's ID - that's the bit I'm stuck on!!

try http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q298/8/37.ASP
it explains how you can identify your unknown device using the registry editor. (careful with the registry!)

To find out what your PCI - moden is you
right click, my computer, left click properties, left click device manager, left click the + next to modem, should tell you.
Or:
start>settings>control panel> modem.
Or:
start>run>(type in)msinfo32.exe>ok>components>modem.
Maybe one of these will work.

That would probably be the search command you would type on any other PC you would look @...

Hope it helps!

Start here, and run the modem identifier .exe. Not sure if this works with other manuf (other than Coxenant) but it solved my problem.

I'm a sys admin supporting a number of state agencies. Currently working with a Dell Latitude C600. Can't find a driver for the "PCI communications device."
Vendor ID = 10B7 (3Com)
Device ID = 1007
Subsystem = 61370
Sent an Email to dell. Got a Quick Response pointing me to this web site:

http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R18320&sid=LAT_PNT_P3C_C600&lang=EN&lib=20&os=WNT5&searchtype=filter&devid=632&type=DRVR

Downloaded and checked the INF. Its got the right Vendor, Device, and Subsystem ID. Loaded it up, sure enough it works.

Bottom Line:
Use this web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q298/8/37.ASP

Understand that every PCI device has to have a Vendor ID, a Device ID and a Subsystem ID. The driver you need will have those ID's Listed in the INF file. Push your vendor to give you a driver that matches. Dell has been great.

I am also trying to fix a modem bug in an "old" machine with Windows 98.

But, oh surprise! I ran into the "PCI Communication Device" mystery.

I too feel relieved to see I am not the only one. (It makes me realize "it's not my fault".)

I'll look for the device information in the registry, as suggested. Thanks for the tips and support!!
